Stevens Named NEIBA Rookie of the Year

Four Eagles earn All-New England honors
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College freshman Jacob Stevens was named New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association's (NEIBA) Rookie of the Year, voted on by the organization's head coaches. The starting right-hander finished the regular-season with a 2.04 ERA, sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Senior Joe Cronin and juniors Justin Dunn and Michael Strem earned NEIBA All-New England Second-Team honors while junior Mike King was named to the third team.

Stevens, who was recently named to the ACC All-Freshman Team, tallied a 3-3 over 13 appearances, logging 12 starts. He struck out 67 and allowed just 30 walks. Opponents hit just .209 against him, the fifth-lowest average in the conference. His ERA currently ranks fifth on BC's single-season list and his opponent batting average ranks fourth.

The Darien, Conn., product struck out a career-high nine against North Dakota State on March 5 in just the third start of his career, going six innings without allowing a hit and walking just one. He threw a career-high seven innings in a victory over then fourth-ranked Louisville on April 22, allowing just one unearned run, seven hits, one run, one walk and four strikeouts. He was named to USA Baseball's 60-player midseason Golden Spikes Award watch list. The award is presented to the top amateur baseball player in the country.

Cronin, the four-year starter from Scarborough, Maine, ranks on many of the Eagles' career top-10 lists, including tied for first with 112 career walks, tied for third with 49 career doubles and tied for seventh with six career triples. One of four players to start all 51 games this year, he leads the team in slugging percentage (.444), RBIs (34), triples (3), home runs (4), total bases (83) and is tied for the team lead with 13 doubles. He earned ACC Player of the Week and NCBWA National Hitter of the Week honors for his performance at then eighth-ranked NC State, leading the Eagles with a .526 batting average, 10 hits, 11 RBIs and a 1.211 slugging percentage as BC took the first ACC series of the season in Raleigh.

Dunn, who is 3-1 with two saves and three combined shutouts on the year, picked up All-ACC Third-Team honors earlier in the week. He made six starts this season and recorded a 1.22 ERA with 32 strikeouts and just 12 walks in those outings. Before transitioning to a starter, he had nine appearances out of the bullpen, racking up a win, two saves, 17 strikeouts and just three walks. He helped the Eagles to their first ACC Baseball Championship appearance in six years with his first career complete game at No. 22 Georgia Tech on May 21, allowing just six hits, three runs – two earned – without walking a batter. He recorded a career-high nine strikeouts and earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for his efforts. The Freeport, N.Y., native leads BC starters and is second in the ACC with a 1.35 ERA – currently first on BC's single-season records list – and opponents are batting just .210 against him – tied for fifth in BC history. His 3.50 ERA is currently sixth all-time and his seven career saves is tied for seventh. Dunn was recently named a semifinalist for the Greg Olson Award which honors college baseball's breakout player of the year.

Strem has also started all 51 games for the Eagles, 50 of them in centerfield. He leads the way with 60 hits and is second on the team with a .306 batting average, .393 slugging percentage 31 RBIs and 77 total bases. Â He has at least one hit in 19 of the last 25 games with 17 RBIs. He also is tied for fifth in the nation with eight outfield assets. His 46 career doubles ties for eighth in BC career record books. He had a career day at Harvard on April 12, going 4-for-5 at the plate, tying a career high for hits and driving in a career-high six runs. The Burlingame, Calif., native was the first BC player since Chris Shaw on April 5, 2015 at Wake Forest to record at least six RBIs. Â He led the way for the Eagles with seven hits against No. 22 Georgia Tech in the three-game, batting .500 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs.

King has seven wins on the season, the first BC pitcher to tally seven wins in six years. He has a 3.15 ERA in 15 appearances, 14 starts, allowing just 25 walks and 56 strikeouts over 91.1 innings. He has not allowed a walk three times in 2016 and has never registered more than three in all 14 starts. King also has given up two earned runs or less in all but four outings. In the rubber match against the Hokies on May 1, he threw his third career complete game, allowing just one run on five hits with six Ks and two walks. On April 10 against then No. 16 Virginia, allowed one run over seven innings to the Cavs, walked three and struck out six. His 3.07 career ERA is second all-time at BC.
