The honors are the first for both Eagles
DURHAM, N.C. – Boston College junior Justin Dunn earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference Third-Team honors while freshman Jacob Stevens was named to the ACC All-Freshman, the league announced on Monday after a vote by the head coaches. The honors were the first for both right-handed starters.
Â
Dunn, who is 3-1 with two saves and three combined shutouts on the year, has made six starts this season and recorded a 1.22 ERA with 32 strikeouts and just 12 walks in those outings. While he had nine appearances out of the bullpen, mainly as the Eagles' closer - racking up a win, two saves, 17 strikeouts and just three walks - he has been stellar in a starting role. He helped the Eagles to their first ACC Baseball Championship appearance in six years with his first career complete game at No. 22 Georgia Tech on Saturday, allowing just six hits, three runs – two earned – without walking a batter. He recorded a career-high nine strikeouts and earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for his efforts.
Â
The Freeport, N.Y., native leads BC starters and is second in the ACC with a 1.35 ERA – currently first on BC's single-season records list – and opponents are batting just .210 against him – tied for fifth in BC history. His 3.50 ERA is currently sixth all-time and his seven career saves is tied for seventh. Dunn was recently named a semifinalist for the Greg Olson Award which honors college baseball's breakout player of the year.
Â
Stevens also has three wins as he is 3-3 with a 2.04 ERA. In 12 starts – 13 appearances – the freshman has struck out 67 and allowed just 30 walks. Opponents are hitting just .209 against him. His ERA ranks sixth in the conference and his opponent batting average is fifth. He threw the first 29 innings of his career without giving up an earned run. His ERA currently ranks fifth on BC's single-season list and his opponent batting average ranks fourth.
Â
He struck out a career-high nine against North Dakota State on March 5 in just the third start of his career, going six innings without allowing a hit and walking just one. He threw a career-high seven innings in a victory over then fourth-ranked Louisville on April 22, allowing just one unearned run, seven hits, one run, one walk and four strikeouts. Â The righty from Darien, Conn., was named to USA Baseball's 60-player midseason Golden Spikes Award watch list. The award is presented to the top amateur baseball player in the country.
Â
Clemson outfielder Seth Beer was voted ACC Player and Freshman of the Year, becoming the first player in ACC history to earn both honors in a single season. Louisville junior Drew Harrington was voted the ACC Pitcher of the Year, while the Cardinals' Dan McDonnell was selected as the ACC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
