KEY PLAYS
With the game tied at one in the bottom of the ninth, Braren singled to put on the winning run. Palomaki got the runner to third with another base hit and Sciortino plated the game-winning run with a single past the diving second baseman.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a pitchers' duel, the Cardinals broke through in the fifth with a lead-off home run by Danny Rosenbaum. Dunn retired the next three batters with grounders to get out of the inning.
- The BC defense was on display in the sixth as Dunn allowed a lead-off single to Drew Ellis but senior third baseman Gabriel Hernandez caught a fast-falling liner for the second time on the day for the first out. Ellis stole second and when Devin Hairston flared one to right, Ellis tried to come home, but senior right fielder Logan Hoggarth came up throwing and nailed him at the plate. Junior shortstop Johnny Adams ended the inning with a diving grab at short and flip to second.
- The Eagles tied the game in the seventh after getting out of a bases-loaded jam. In the top of the inning, sophomore RHP Brian Rapp gave up a lead-off single to Will Smith, who stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Rapp got a fly ball but issued a walk to put two on. He got a strikeout looking for the second out and senior RHP John Nicklas entered the game. Nicklas gave up a walk to load the bases but got a fly ball to left to get out of the jam.
- In the bottom of the inning, Hoggarth led off with a single through the left side, moved to second on a sac bunt by Hernandez and to third on a chopper to short by senior pinch hitter Stephen Sauter. On a full count, Palomaki tied the game with an RBI single to left center, scoring Hoggarth. Palomaki stole second and advanced to third with UL catcher Smith's sailed into the outfield. Sciortino drew a walk to put two on but a fly ball to center ended BC's scoring chances.
- Skogsbergh retired six of the seven Cardinals he faced, allowing just a single in the top of the ninth to give BC a chance.
- Braren led off with a base hit through the left side and freshman Jake Alu came in to pinch run. With one down, Palomaki got one through on the right side and Alu hustled around to third. Sciortino laced one between a diving second baseman and the second base bag to score Alu, giving BC the victory.
