BC HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Boston College scored 10 goals in the final 22:37 of the game, but a late turnover proved costly for the Eagles as they fell just short, 15-14, to Virginia Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville. The loss drops BC to 6-5 overall while the victory for the Cavaliers gave them their first conference win of the season.Â
- On her second save of the afternoon, junior netminder Zoe Ochoa became only the ninth player in program history to record 200 career saves and the first since Emily Mata, who played for the Eagles between 2012-14. Now with 203 career saves, Ochoa is 15 saves shy of eighth place on the Eagles career saves list, currently held by Rachel Zeller, who recorded 218 career saves in her time as an Eagle.Â
- Senior Sarah Mannelly moved into sole possession of fifth place in BC career goals, netting her 156th career tally at 7:19 of the second half. With the goal, she surpassed Brooke Blue's record of 155, set between 2010 and 2014. So far this season, Mannelly has jumped from eighth place to fifth place on the program's goal list and is now seven shy of Lauren Costello's 164 career goal mark set between 2007 and 2010, the fourth most goals in program history.Â
- Sarah Mannelly also moved into sole possession of fifth place on the program's all-time points list on Saturday. With two goals and two assists, the New Canaan, Conn. native has amassed 219 career points, which surpasses Kristin Igoe's mark of 218 career points, collected from 2008-2012. Mannelly is only three points shy of fourth place on the career points list, currently held by Mikaela Rix (2012-15).
- Junior Kate Weeks netted a new career high with four goals on the afternoon. The midfielder surpassed her previous high of three goals, set twice in her career, most recently against North Carolina last Saturday. Molly Erdle and Brooke Troy also set new career bests, Erdle with four draw controls and Troy with four ground balls.
- Caroline Margolis recorded her 51st career assist on Saturday, moving her into sixth place in the career assists record at Boston College. She surpassed Kristin Igoe, who tallied 50 between 2008 and 2012. Â
TURNING POINT
- Two goals by Virginia, 51 seconds apart, in the final five minutes of the contest pushed the UVA lead to three and despite two late BC goals, the Eagles effort came up just short as the team was unable to tie it with possession in the final minute.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 2-0 in the early minutes of the contest, BC got on the board when Caroline Margolis found the back of the Virginia net on a free position opportunity for her 16th of the season with 19:52 remaining in the first half.Â
- After Virginia regained a two-goal lead, Kate Weeks cut the Eagles deficit in half less than two minutes after Margolis' tally. A free position goal brought the Eagles within one point at 17:53 of the first half
- Following a span of 11 minutes that saw the maroon and gold allow two goals to Virginia, Kate Weeks found the net a second time to cut into the UVa. Lead. With 6:36 left in the first half, Weeks tallied her second of the game on a feed from Sarah Mannelly.Â
- With less than five minutes remaining, sophomore Kenzie Kent registered her third goal of the season to bring the Eagles within one. The team allowed a Cavalier goal with less than two minutes to go and trail, 6-4, at the break.Â
- Kent snapped the Cavaliers streak of three straight goals to begin the second half with an unassisted tally at 22:37 of the second half. Her fourth of the season cut the Eagles deficit to 9-5.
- Down 12-5, Emma Schurr netted her second goal of the season on a free position opportunity with 17:03 on the clock.Â
- Kate Weeks tallied two more goals within 30 seconds of each other to set a new career high for goals in a game. With 15:43, she converted a UVa turnover, picked up the ground ball and put it past the GK before her fourth of the season at 15:14, following the draw control by teammate Tess Chandler.Â
- Caroline Zaffino tallied her fourth of the season with 10:06 remaining in the second half. It was the freshman's first goal since March 13 against Stetson, when she recorded her first career hat trick.Â
- Less than three minutes later, Sarah Mannelly tallied her first of the game to cut the deficit to two. With the tally, she now moved into sole possession of fifth place on the program's career goal list with 156.
- Mannelly registered her second of the game and 22nd of the season with 6:24 remaining
- Virginia got back-to-back goals during the four minute mark to extend their lead to 15-12.
- Tess Chandler tallied her first of the game with 1:44 left to move within two before Margolis netted her third of the game at 1:09 to bring BC within one, 15-14.Â
