BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Joe Cronin extended his on-base streak to 14 games and his hit streak to eight games as he went 3-for-4 with a single, double and home run. He knocked in both of BC's runs on the afternoon. In the last eight games, he has notched at least one hit, recording 14 hits, five runs and 12 RBIs.
- Senior Logan Hoggarth extended his hit streak to six games with a 1-for-3 day.
- The pitching combination of sophomore RHP Brian Rapp, freshman LHP Dan Metzdorf and senior RHP John Nicklas threw 3.2 scoreless innings, gave up just one hit, one walk and struck out five.
KEY PLAYS
- The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the third off Cronin's home run, but the Wolfpack countered in the bottom of the inning with two runs of its own off senior left-handed starter Jesse Adams to go up, 3-2.
- The one run was all NC State would need as its lefty starter Brian Brown kept the Eagles off the board for the remainder of his outing, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and one walk with nine Ks.
- The Eagles threatened in the ninth, putting a runner in scoring position with two down, but right-handed closer Tommy DeJuneas got the strikeout to end the game and hand State the win to even the series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pack was the first to get on the board, scoring its first run of the series in its first at bat. Adams started the inning with a strikeout looking, but surrendered a solo home run to Andrew Knizner over the left-field wall. Adams came back with another K and, after allowing a single up the middle, he forced a fly ball to center to get out of the inning.
- Cronin put the Eagles in front in the third. Sophomore Jake Palomaki was hit to start the inning and Cronin launched his second home run of the season well over the left-field wall to put BC up, 2-1.
- NC State regained the lead with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Josh McLain led off with a single and moved to second when sophomore right fielder Donovan Casey mishandled the ball in the outfield. Brock Deatherage was hit by a pitch to put two on. On a fly ball to center, McLain tagged up, putting runners on the corners, but Adams came back with a strikeout looking for the second out. Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and Chance Shepard plated them with a double to left center. Adams got a chopper to second to end the inning.
- With one down in the ninth, senior pinch hitter Stephen Sauter singled through the left side and classmate Gabriel Hernandez came in to pinch run. Freshman Gian Martellini laced one to third, and Evan Mendoza made a diving stop and threw from his kneed to get the second out, but Hernandez advanced to second. With two down, junior pinch hitter Chris Balogh faced DeJuneas, who got him swinging to end the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Adams went 4.1 innings, allowed six hits, three runs – all earned – and struck out five. He did not walk a batter. It was the first loss shouldered by a BC starter in 2016.
- Junior Michael Strem saw his eight-game hit streak come to an end as he was 0-for-2 with a sac bunt and a walk on the day.
- Nicklas made his 67th career appearance on the hill for the Eagles, tying for 10th in BC record books.
- This is the fifth time the Eagles and Wolfpack are split heading into the third game of the series. BC ended up winning the series twice, NC State once and the third game was not played in 2015 due to weather. In 2014, the Eagles took two of three, including the rubber match, in Raleigh.
