BC HIGHLIGHTS & GAME NOTES
- JD Dudek not only scored his first-career short-handed goal, it marked the Eagles' first short-handed strike of the season. Austin Cangelosi followed suit with a short-handed goal at 13:27 of the third to give BC a pair of goals down a pair of skaters. Boston College has not scored a pair of short-handed goals in a game since the Eagles did it in the exact same spot on Jan. 22, 2016. Cangelosi and Miles Wood both scored short-handed goals at the Mullins Center last year.
- Austin Cangelosi scored his first power play goal of the season and seventh of his career in addition to his third-career short-handed goal. The Estero, Fla. native has logged six-career multi-goal games as an Eagle. It was his first since turning the trick at Denver on Oct. 8, 2016. The senior assistant captain has netted 41 goals for the Eagles in 127 games.
- Ryan Fitzgerald netted his third goal of the season and the 57th of his career. The North Reading, Mass. native continues to shoot up the career goal charts and is now tied for 44th all-time on The Heights with Bob Reardon (1970-73) and Ben Smith (2006-10).
- Colin White netted his sixth-career power play goal and second of the season. White scored BC's first power play goal of the season in BC's home opener against Colorado College. The Hanover, Mass. native added his second goal of the night for his fifth-career multi-goal game as an Eagle. White added an assist for a three-point night and his 14th-career multi-point performance. Saturday's two goal, one assist performance marked his fifth outing with three or more points.
- Boston College scored a pair of power play goals this season, marking the second occasion the Eagles have found the back of the net with the extra skater this season. BC did it against Colorado College, as well.
- Jesper Mattila scored his second-career goal on Saturday night at Massachusetts and added the assist on BC's first short-handed goal of the year for his first-career multi-point game as an Eagle.
- Sophomore defenseman Michael Kim attained his second-career multi-point game with another two-assist performance.
- Senior Matthew Gaudreau has assisted in his last four games, matching a career high from Oct. 30 – Nov.13, 2015
- Boston College's first period consisted of three different types of goals: short-handed (JD Dudek), even strength (Jesper Mattila) and Austin Cangelosi (power play).
- In their last four outings against UMass, the Eagles scored an aggregate of 27 goals.
GOAL DESCRIPTIONS
FIRST GOAL - FIRST PERIOD – JD Dudek – 8:48 – SHORT HANDED
• The Eagles took a penalty midway through the first but sturdy defense yielded Boston College's first short-handed tally of the season. Jesper Mattila broke up Massachusetts' cycle near the blue line and jutted it up to JD Dudek. Dudek stepped around one Minuteman and had a clear breakaway on Nic Renyard. Dudek picked his spot and popped it right past him at 8:48 for the 1-0 lead down a skater.
SECOND GOAL - FIRST PERIOD – Jesper Mattila – 10:25 – EVEN STRENGTH
• On the next possession, the Eagles won the draw and descended into UMass' end. The Eagles struck from far out after Zach Walker fished the puck out to Graham McPhee at the top of the left circle. McPhee hit Jesper Mattila with a no-look pass just within the blue line and the freshman wrister it past Renyard through the screen at 10:25 of the first for the 2-0 edge.
THIRD GOAL - FIRST PERIOD – Austin Cangelosi – 14:58 – POWER PLAY
• BC capitalized on its first power play of the night in transition, capped by Austin Cangelosi in the slot. Scott Savage worked the puck out to Christopher Brown on the far side of the sheet. Brown scrambled through the neutral zone, brought the puck to the goal line and extended and connected with Cangelosi crashing in from the slot. Cangelosi buried the one-timer feed at 14:58 for a 3-0 lead in the first period on the power play.
FOURTH GOAL - SECOND PERIOD – Ryan Fitzgerald – 4:16 – EVEN STRENGTH
• Just as a BC power play expired, Ryan Fitzgerald managed to still squeeze the Eagles' fourth goal of the evening out of it. BC kept the puck in between the circles and Michael Kim took a chance on Renyard in right. The shot was initially stopped but jutted out to the near post on a rebound from White where Fitzgerald was in prime position to pounce on it and toss it back in at 4:16 for the four-goal pad, 4-0.
FIFTH GOAL - SECOND PERIOD – Colin White – 10:54 – POWER PLAY
• UMass's Riley McDougall went off for hooking at 10:41 of the second period and Colin White made them pay 13 seconds later at 10:54. Matthew Gaudreau and Ryan Fitzgerald worked the power play unit perfectly, quickly passing behind the net and freeing up White in the slot. Fitzgerald made the dish between the circles and White sniped it top-left shelf for the 5-0 advantage on the power play.
SIXTH GOAL - THIRD PERIOD – Colin White – 11:05 – EVEN STRENGTH
• Casey Fitzgerald rimmed the puck all the way out of the neutral zone to where Kim was positioned near the net. David Cotton bottled up a Minutemen and Kim was able to scoot the puck to White on the near post. With no one guarding the crease, White skated up and roofed the wrister at 11:05 for his second goal of the night.
SEVENTH GOAL - THIRD PERIOD – Austin Cangelosi – 13:27 – SHORT HANDED
• The Boston College penalty-killing unit was out trying to stave off a Luke McInnis five-minute major and the Eagles turned it into BC's second short-handed tally of the night. Savage ripped the puck deep within BC's end around the Eagles' net to Cangelosi on the blue line. No one was within four strides of Cangelosi and he was off to the races and buried it five-hole on Renyard to cap the Eagles' scoring.
