BC HIGHLIGHTS
- In his final start in an Eagles uniform, senior RHP John Gorman threw six innings, allowed five hits, one run, two walks and struck out six. He finished his BC career tied for fifth in BC record books with 207 career Ks and fifth all-time with 237.0 innings pitched. His 71 career appearances rank eighth and his 32 career starts is tied for eighth. He ended 2015 with 77 strikeouts, which is tied for 10th on the school's single-season list.
- Senior Blake Butera drove in a run in the eighth on a single, his 204th career hit, which is tied for seventh in BC record books.
- Sophomore Michael Strem tallied his 21st double of the year, which is tied for fifth in BC record book and now leads the ACC.
- Freshman Jake Palomaki started the game with a single and went 3-for-4, extending his on-base streak to 36 games and his career-long hit streak to 10 games.
- Junior Logan Hoggarth doubled for the second straight game, tying a career-long hit streak at seven games. He has at least one hit in 16 of the last 20 games.
The Eagles and Irish were knotted at one until the eighth when sophomore RHP Justin Dunn gave up four runs to push ahead. BC managed to get one back in the bottom of the inning, but a double play stranded two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles were the first to score, tallying a run in the third. Sophomore Nick Sciortino and Palomaki tallied back-to-back singles to left and Butera tried to move them up with a sacrifice bunt, but Irish starter Smoyer went to third to get Sciortino. With runners on first and second, Smoyer tried to pick off Butera at first and his throw went wide and first baseman Zak Kutsulis bobbled the ball, allowing Palomaki to score the first run of the game.
- The Irish answered in the fourth as Kyle Fiala drew a lead-off walk and moved to third on a double by Ryan Bull. Ryan Lidge chopped one up the middle to score a run. Second baseman Butera made a good play on the ball for the first out and Gorman got a strikeout and groundout to strand a runner at third.
- BC got out of a jam in the seventh to keep the game knotted at one. A walk and single put runners on the corners with no outs. Dunn entered the game and got the first out swinging. Mac Hudgins tried to score a run on a bunt, but first baseman Strem charged in and caught the ball in the air for the second out. Dunn ended the inning with another strikeout, stranding two Irish runners on base.
- Notre Dame scored four in the eighth off Dunn to break the tie. He allowed two singles with two strikeouts in between but gave up a base hit to Lane Richards. Junior leftfielder Chris Shaw made a diving attempt but could not come up with the ball, allowing the go-ahead run to cross the plate. Richards moved to second on the throw and Kutsulis followed with a single to score two more. Another base hit plated him to make it 5-1.
- BC got one back in the bottom of the inning as Palomaki doubled with one down and Butera drove him in with a single to right center. Strem drew a walk to put two on, and Shaw battled in an eight-pitch at bat, but he grounded one to second for a double play that ended the inning.
