Baseball's King Named ACC Pitcher of the Week
April 20, 2015 | Baseball
Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College sophomore Mike King was named Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday. The right-hander threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout in the Eagles' 1-0 victory over No. 24 Georgia Tech on Friday.
King earned his first win of the 2015 season, striking out a career-high eight in his first nine-inning performance. He did not walk a batter and the only hit he surrendered was in the first inning. The Warwick, R.I., native retired the final 17 batters he faced, beginning in the fourth inning. He faced the minimum number of batters (27) and a runner did not advance past second base.
The last time a BC pitcher threw a complete-game one-hitter was in 2003 when Chris Lambert led the Eagles to a 5-0 victory over Pittsburgh in a seven-inning performance. The last time a BC hurler pitched a complete-game shutout was in 2010 as Michael Dennhardt completed the feat in a 4-0 victory over Maryland.
King is the fifth Eagle to earn the conference accolades for pitcher of the week honors. The last was Andrew Chin in the final week of the 2014 season when he threw a complete-game, two-hitter at Clemson.
Florida State designated hitter Chris Marconcini earned ACC Player of the Week honors.
The Eagles (21-18, 9-11 ACC) return to action on Wednesday, April 22 when they take on Massachusetts in the 2015 Beanpot Championship at Fenway Park. The consolation game between Harvard-Northeastern will start at 3 p.m. and the championship game will be 45 minutes after its conclusion. Tickets are $10 for general admission to both games and all proceeds benefit the Pete Frates No. 3 Fund. Visit redsox.com/beanpot for more information.
