April 13, 2015 | Baseball
Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team will host the Fourth Annual ALS Awareness Game on Saturday, April 18 at 1:30 p.m. against Georgia Tech in honor of former Eagle and current director of baseball operations Pete Frates.
Frates was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in March 2012 at 27 years old. Since his diagnosis, Frates, along with his family and friends, have worked tirelessly to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for the disease. In the summer of 2014, Frates championed the Ice Bucket Challenge through the use of social media. Along with the amount of awareness brought to ALS, over $200 million was raised to help find a cure.
A Beverly, Mass., native, he played in the outfield for the Maroon and Gold from 2004-07. A captain his senior year, he finished his BC career with 107 starts, a .228 average, 88 hits, 56 RBIs, 11 home runs and 34 stolen bases.
Four organizations that support ALS and the Frates family have been involved with - ALS Association of Massachusetts, the Angel Fund, ALS TDI and Compassionate Care ALS - will be on hand with information about the disease and ways to help the fight.
Strikeout ALS clothing and memorabilia will be sold during the game to benefit the Pete Frates #3 Fund, which was set up to help with medical care and expenses not covered by health insurances. For more information, visit www.petefrates.com.
During the game, fans can purchase raffle tickets to have the chance to win one of the BC 2007 replica jerseys with Frates' name and No. 3 on the back, worn in the 2015 Eagles-Red Sox exhibition game on March 3. The proceeds of the raffle will be donated to the four organizations at the game.
Row One Sneakers will be on hand to sell their BC branded shoes with proceeds also being donated to Frates' fund.
In each of the last three seasons, over 2,000 fans have been in attendance to show their support for a cause very close the BC community's heart. In 2013, the largest crowd in Shea Field history, 2,306 fans, attended the Eagles' game against Virginia Tech.
