HIGHLIGHTS
Boston College picked up its third ACC win of the season on Friday evening at Power Gym, defeating NC State by a score of 3-1. McKenna Goss and Julia Topor each recorded nine kills in the match while senior outside hitter Katty Workman tallied a team-high 14 kills to go along with her .263 hitting percentage in the game. Senior Kam McLain had seven total blocks in just two sets off the bench for the Eagles in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One:
In the opening frame, Boston College was forced into extra points for the second straight game, but came out victorious, 26-24. The Eagles, who saw 14 tied scores and four lead changes in the first set alone, led by three at 20-17 before the Wolfpack chipped away and eventually took the lead as part of a 4-0 NC State run. BC and NC State exchanged points as the end of the set neared, but the Maroon and Gold finished with back-to-back kills from sophomore Brittany Pavich and Workman to break a 24-all tie and win the first set.
Set Two:
NC State won the first point on a kill from Julia Brown and never lost the lead, as NC State evened the match score at one heading into the break. Freshman McKenna Goss and junior Anna Skold each recorded three kills in the set, but five kills from NCSU's Jill Brown and an additional four from Kaitlyn Kearney fueled the Pack in the second set.
Set Three:
Coming out of the break, Boston College came out firing and quickly jumped out to an early 12-5 lead behind the play of McKenna Goss and Kam McLain off the bench, who tallied five kills and four total blocks in the third set alone. BC extended their lead to as much as 11, and despite NCSU cutting the lead in half at 20-10, the Eagles took the set 25-12.
Set Four:
BC took the first point of the fourth set following a kill from Julia Topor and extended their early lead to 10-6 before NC State was forced to call timeout. Following the quick break, NCSU would cut back into the Eagles lead, but Boston College was too strong as they cruised to a 25-15 set and took the match by a final score of 3-1. After NC State pulled within two at 15-13, the Maroon and Gold went on an 8-0 run to go ahead 23-13, before finishing it off with a Michelle Klinikowski kill.
COACH QUOTES:
"It was a nice match for us offensively. Our hitters made great decisions and that kept our hitting errors really low. We're scoring well. It just took a while for our blocking and defense to get caught up. The nice thing is we stopped giving up really easy points and in the third and fourth set, we forced [NCSU] to have to make great plays to score. As soon as that happened, I feel that turned the tide and then we stayed nice and consistent down the stretch. We didn't ease up and I am really happy of the team to be able to do that. I've said it a number of times, but this team continues to fight and work. I am so proud of them and their ability to do that." - Coach Chris Campbell
UP NEXT:
Boston College will honor their five seniors in a pre-game ceremony before their 12 noon game against UNC on Sunday in Power Gym. Franny Hock, Kam McLain, Sarah Mendes, Mallori Moffat and Katty Workman will all be recognized for their hard work as student-athletes at BC. The game will be the last on the home stand before the Eagles hit the road for four straight.
