BC TRAVELS TO TAMPA TO FACE USF IN NCAA SECOND ROUND
• Boston College travels to Tampa to take on #15 USF in the second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Corbett Stadium.
• The Eagles (10-7-1, 4-4-0 ACC) earned an at-large bid to the field with the help of its No. 15 RPI. They hosted America East champion Vermont on Thursday night in the first round and won, 1-0.
• It was the first win for BC in the NCAA Tournament since 2009.
• USF (11-5-3, 5-1-2 AAC) earned a first round bye and the 14th seed nationally. The Bulls have lost two of their last three outings but are 5-2-3 in their last 10 matches.
• The two sides have met just once before in 1983. USF won that match, 5-1.
BC IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
• The Eagles are making their 13th appearance in the NCAA Championship. Head coach Ed Kelly has led BC to 12 of those tournament appearances, earning bids in 1990, 2000-02, 2004, 2007-12 and 2015.
• Boston College has a 6-10-3 all-time record in NCAA Tournament action. It is 1-2 in penalty kick shootouts.
• The Eagles are looking to make their first ever appearance in the College Cup, which will be held at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kansas.
• BC reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship in 2002 before losing to Creighton. It also advanced to the third round of the tournament in 2009 before falling to Drake.
ENSTROM'S GOAL LIFTS BC PAST VERMONT
• Freshman Simon Enstrom scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 71st minute to give Boston College a 1-0 win over Vermont in the first round of the NCAA Championship on Thursday in Newton.
• Junior Zeiko Lewis and sophomore Len Zeugner were credited with the assists.
• The teams played to a 0-0 deadlock in the first half, with Vermont edging BC, 6-5, in shots.
• Vermont pressed in the second half, out-shooting the Eagles 10-3, but BC managed to play the counter for the game-winning goal.
• The Catamounts had a bid to go ahead in the 49th minute when Charlie DeFeo's header was cleared off the line by senior Atobra Ampadu and Brian Wright got on the end of the rebound. His overhead kick-attempt was saved by senior Alex Kapp.
• UVM had a second effort in the 65th minute when Jaime Miralles' diving header was stopped by Kapp.
• In the 71st minute, Zeugner played a long ball out of the back and connected with Lewis down the left wing. Lewis cut inside and sent an in-swinging cross back toward goal where Enstrom stepped behind his defender and tapped the ball past the keeper on the far post.
• BC almost doubled it eight minutes later when sophomore Idrissa Bangura's back-to-back shots from inside the six-yard box were saved and off the post.
