The Eagles also hosted the 7th annual Multiple Sclerosis Fundraiser in support of former field hockey player Kathleen Murphy ('09). Since Murphy's diagnosis in her sophomore season, BC field hockey has raised over $35,000 to help fight MS. Before the start of the game, Murphy was honored on the field with the entire 2014 field hockey team.
The Eagles' first goal, netted by sophomore midfielder Emily McCoy, came off of a corner insertion by sophomore forward Brittany Sheenan at the 16 minute mark. After Sheenan inserted the ball, sophomore Eryn McCoy crossed it to Emily McCoy who scored in the upper left corner.
Sophomore forward Leah Frome tallied the Eagles' second goal, and her first of the season, with ten minutes left in the first half. Brittany Sheenan fired a shot which deflected off the crossbar. Frome scored on the rebound to put BC up 2-0 on the Minutewomen.
"We talked a lot about our intangibles for today: the team's energy, the work rate. The mantra today was `refuse to lose'
"When the team chooses to play and compete hard, they absolutely can. BC set a very good standard today, and it's one that I know they're going to work really hard to meet each and every game," said head coach Ainslee Lamb.
Boston College controlled the game, peppering UMass goalie Sam Carlino with 24 total shots. The Eagles defense, coordinated by associate head coach Kelly Doton, held UMass to just eight shots throughout the game Junior goalkeeper Leah Settipane recorded her second shutout of the season, making five total saves. With her shutout today, Settipane is now fifth on the all-time list for career shutouts with ten.
"I think Kelly Doton is one of the best coaches in the country. She proved it today. Her defense was probably one of the best in the country statistically today. Carolyn Cahill, arguably one of the best goalkeeping coaches in the country, is preparing Leah Settipane. Having the staff and the kids actually going out there and implementing what they're learning is huge. It's a huge kudos to that group that they did such a great job in this win," said Lamb.
Boston College field hockey's next game is Friday, Sep. 12 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Boston University to open Alumni Weekend.
