The Eagles had more opportunities in the first half, tallying seven shots against goalie Valentina Cerda. The Boston College defense held the Terriers to three shots in the first half. Neither team could capitalize on their shots as the teams entered halftime tied at zero.
Boston College scored the first goal of the game 16 minutes into the second half. Freshman forward Brooke Matherson netted her first career goal for BC after rebound on a corner to put the Eagles up, 1-0.
"It's not easy being a freshman in a top 15 Division I field hockey program. The entire class is just persevering and working really hard in practice. The upperclassmen are really leading them, so they know what the expectations are. All that investment in Brooke by the upperclassmen paid off today by her having the ability to put the ball in the net. Brooke's future is definitely bright here at BC," said head coach Ainslee Lamb.
The Terriers tied the game up at one with 12 minutes left in the game. Amanda Cassera snuck one past junior goalkeeper Leah Settipane after a corner on her own rebound. The teams were still even at one at the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime.
During overtime, the Eagles controlled possession, recording six shots while holding BU to one shot. Boston College's game-winning goal came eleven minutes into the fifteen minute overtime. Senior midfielder Emma Plasteras carried the ball into the circle then passed to junior forward Kelcie Hromisin, who scored on a reverse chip.
"Associate head coach Kelly Doton runs the overtime. She prepares the team and makes all the decisions tactically, so that was really cool to step back and watch her win the game with her decision-making. One of her emphases is possession. You can clearly see in that game, BC just kept the ball the whole overtime. BU's opportunities were more one-player opportunities where I felt like ours were more number opportunities.
"I'm so happy for Kelcie [Hromisin}. I think she's one of the most hard-working players in our program, and it's great to see that pay off for her and to get a great win like this for our team" said Lamb.
After their OT victory against BU, the Eagles improved their record to 4-1 on the season. Boston College field hockey's next game is Sunday, Sep. 14 at 2 p.m.as it hosts No. 2 Connecticut at the Newton Sports Complex.
