"It was a great team win for the program. It was nice to see the team's ability and desire to recover after the weekend and make a clear statement in the opening minutes of the game tonight," said head coach Ainslee Lamb.
The Eagles came out strong with a hot start as sophomore forward Brittany Sheenan scored two goals within the first six minutes of the game. Sheenan's first goal was netted off a rebound while the second goal was a one-timer off a pass by senior midfielder Emma Plasteras.
Sheenan, the lone goal scorer for the Eagles, recorded her first career hat trick in BC's victory against the Friars.
"A hat trick is an impressive accomplishment and I am happy that Brittany [Sheenan] achieved that tonight. Her work rate and preparation all week paid off," said Lamb.
Sheenan leads the team with ten points (5g, 0a), including two game-winning goals, on the season.
Providence College's lone goal was netted by Megan Hamilton with 14 minutes left in the game. Sheenan answered on a deflection off of a shot by sophomore forward Eryn McCoy to put the Eagles up 3-1.
Junior goalkeeper Leah Settipane tallied six saves and the Eagles defense fended off the Providence attack only allowing one goal on 11 shots by the Friars.
"All lines contributed to the win--backs, mids, and forwards. Leah [Settipane] played outstanding in goal and kept us in that game. As always, Providence College is impressive and [head coach] Diane Madl always gets her team to play at a great level with incredible energy. " Lamb said.
Settipane now has 12 saves on the season with a goals against average of (GAA) 1.67.
Boston College field hockey's next game is its home opener on Sunday, Sep. 7 at 3 p.m. when the Eagles host UMass at the brand new Newton Sports Complex.
