TAMPA, Fla. – The Boston College softball team fished with a perfect 5-0 record at the USF Series Tournament with a 4-3 victory in its final game of the weekend against Northwestern Sunday morning. The Eagles were led by Nicole D’Argento in the circle, who pitched a complete game and struck out nine batters through seven innings while only allowing three runs on eight hits.
Northwestern struck first in the game with one run in the top of the first inning. Emily Allard singled on a bunt to third base to lead off the inning. Mari Majam grounded out to second to advance the runner second base before Marisa Bast hit an RBI single up the middle to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats doubled their lead with another run in the top of the third. Allard hit a one-out single to center field and then stole second base. Majam followed that with an RBI single to left field to put Northwestern up 2-0.
The Eagles responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead. D’Argento singled and Tory Speer doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Alana Dimaso and Taylor Coroneos back-to-back RBI singles to plate the first two runs. DiMaso then scored on an illegal pitch before freshman Jordan Weed hit an RBI double to left field to send Coroneos home, capping off the four-run inning.
Northwestern pulled within one in the top of the seventh inning when Andrea Filler hit a solo home run to left field to make the score 4-3, but the Wildcats were unable to complete the comeback.
D’Argento improved to 8-4 in the season with the win.
Northwestern had an 8-5 advantage in hits in the game.
Boston College (14-7) will have almost two weeks off before returning to action for the first home game of the year on March 22. The Eagles will host Florida State in a three-game weekend series.
Notes: Boston College’s current six-game win streak is the longest since the Eagles won seven straight games from Feb. 18-25 (2012).
