Providence, R.I. – No. 2/3 Boston College women’s hockey (7-0-1, 3-0-0 WHEA) defeated Hockey East opponent Providence, 4-1, Saturday night to complete the sweep of the Friars. With their Saturday night victory, the Eagles have swept their second series of the season.
Junior forward Meghan Grieves started the scoring for Boston College in the first period. Three minutes into the game, Grieves picked the puck off at the point and netted a breakaway goal for her first goal of the season to put the Eagles up, 1-0.
Grieves added her second goal of the night off of a pass from graduate student Danielle Doherty to the slot to extend BC’s lead to 2-0 at the halfway point of the first period. The Eagles headed into the first intermission carrying a 2-0 lead over Providence.
Although Boston College peppered Friar goaltender Allie Morse with ten shots in the second period, the Eagles could not capitalize on their offensive attack in the second frame.
Freshman Tori Sullivan scored her third goal of the series in the first minute of the third period assisted by Kenzie Kent.
With five minutes remaining in the third period, the Friars snuck in a shorthanded goal to narrow BC’s lead to 3-1.
Sophomore forward Andie Anastos responded less than a minute later with a power play goal assisted by Kenzie Kent and Emily Field. Anastos’ third goal of the season brought a 4-1 final score in the Eagles’ win column.
Boston College outshot Providence, 34-19, and freshman goaltender Katie Burt recorded 18 saves to help the Eagles to victory.
BC women’s hockey is back in action at Northeastern Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. for another league matchup.
