Boston, Mass. – No. 1 Boston College women’s hockey defeated Northeastern University (2-5-3, 1-3-0 WHEA), 6-1, Saturday afternoon at historic Matthews Arena. The Eagles (8-0-1, 4-0-0 WHEA) remain undefeated and extend their winning streak to six games, in which they have outshot their opponents, 34-6.
Boston College piled on 20 shots against Northeastern goaltender Chloe Desjardins to start the contest, but the Eagles could not capitalize until late in the opening period.
After the Eagles’ third power play expired with 45 seconds remaining in the first frame, junior defenseman Lexi Bender fired a shot from the point into traffic. Sophomore forward Kristyn Capizzano cleaned up on Bender’s rebound to give BC a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Capizzano
Senior forward Katie Leary, eight minutes into the second period, buried her fourth goal of the season with an assist from freshman Kenzie Kent to put the Eagles up, 2-0.
The Huskies’ Heather Mottau cut BC’s lead to 2-1 with a top shelf goal with six minutes remaining in the middle frame.
The Eagles responded with two quick goals to end the second period. Leary banked a shot off of an NU skate from the right side of the net to extend the Eagles’ lead to 3-1. With under a minute remaining, freshman defenseman Kali Flanagan netted her first collegiate goal on a shot ripped from the point to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead heading into the third period.
On a BC rush with 14 minutes left in the game, Kristyn Capizzano found the back of the net for her second goal of the day. Capizzano’s goal put BC up, 5-1, in the third.
With three minutes remaining, freshman forward Tori Sullivan stole the puck at the blue line for a fast break and buried a backhanded goal to bring a final score of 6-1 into the Eagles’ win column.
Boston College recorded a season-high 46 shots against the Huskies and freshman goaltender Katie Burt tallied a season-high 27 saves to hold NU to just one goal.
The Eagles are back in action for more Hockey East play as BC hosts Vermont at Kelley Rink at 2 p.m.
