Kansas City, Mo. - Former Boston College baseball captain Pete Frates '07 was honored before the start of Game Two of the 2014 World Series. His parents, John and Nancy, brother, Andrew, and sister, Jen, were in attendance on his behalf.
The game was played in honor of Frates for his hard work and dedication to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for ALS, which he was diagnosed with in 2012 at the age of 27. Frates was the catalyst behind the "Ice Bucket Challenge," a social media phenomenon that raised over $140 million for the ALS Association and much more for charities around the world.
In a pre-game press conference, MLB commissioner Bud Selig spoke of Frates' fight, likening him to Lou Gehrig. He also gave the Frates family a silver ice bucket in commemoration of the historic events that took place in August 2014 as the world found about ALS and how to help in the fight.
