Louisville, K.Y. – No. 17 Boston College field hockey (10-5, 2-3 ACC) defeated No. 7 Louisville, 2-1, at Trager Field on Friday afternoon. This is the Eagles’ third win over a top-ten program and their eighth overtime game this season.
"This was a great win for the team. It was a critical one for us. I was happy for the team to win the overtime. They practiced it well this week and it is always nice to see their work and focus pay off. Coach [Kelly] Doton had them ready for it," said head coach Ainslee Lamb.
Junior forward AshLeigh Sebia carried the ball up the baseline from the corner and passed it across the front of Louisville’s net to sophomore forward Eryn McCoy, who notched her sixth goal eight minutes into the game. The Boston College offense maintained possession in the Cardinals’ half throughout the first frame. The Eagle defense put forth a strong effort as Louisville didn’t record a shot until the 26th minute.
The Eagles had their first attack penalty corner opportunity with less than a minute left in the first half, but could not capitalize. Heading into the half, Boston College held on to a 1-0 lead.
The second half saw back and forth play between the Eagles and the Cardinals. Louisville got their first attack penalty corner opportunity with 19:30 left in the game. The Cardinals tallied a dangerous shot on goal off the corner, which was cleared by Boston College.
The Cardinals netted the equalizer with 13 minutes left in the game in the top left corner of the cage to bring the score to 1-1.
The contest remained tied as time expired. For the eighth game of the season, No. 17 Boston College headed into overtime against No. 7 Louisville.
"
Four minutes into overtime, Eryn McCoy carried the ball on a fast break up the middle of the field and scored the game-winner for her second goal of the game.
Junior goalkeeper Leah Settipane recorded three saves overall against the Cardinals to keep the Louisville offense at bay.
"The backs played great and Leah once again made some key saves to keep us in that game.
"We still need to threaten more shots in the attack circle but the attack circle penetrations are excellent. We want to continue to work on capitalizing on those opportunities," said Lamb.
The Eagles remain in Louisville to play a neutral-site contest against Cal on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.
