Chestnut Hill, Mass. - On the same night at that Pete Frates threw out the first pitch at the Red Sox game on the Boston team's ALS Night, the Boston Channel aired a piece about Frates's fight against ALS and how is coping and fighting the disease.
Here is an excerpt from the article, but the full article and video can be seen here.
Baseball has always been Pete Frates passion. It's a cruel irony that battling the condition known as Lou Gehrig's disease has become his life's mission.
"Really from 1939 when he made his final speech, until now, what gains have we made?" Frates said. "Better treatments. That's the number one goal."
Hanging out at home with his girlfriend in Beverly, Frates looks like the typical 27-year-old he was before he realized this winter he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
He figured it out on an Internet search after the star athlete noticed some changes in his body.
"I clicked on 'symptoms,' and it listed about a dozen symptoms. Ten of those hit home for me right away," Frates said. "Stunted walking, dropping things, tripping, falling."
