Softball Heads to 49ers Invitational in Charlotte, N.C.

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team heads to Charlotte, N.C. for the 49ers Invitational from Friday, Feb. 24 to Sunday, Feb. 26. The Eagles (4-1) are off to their best start in 10 seasons through the first five games and will meet Morgan State, Charlotte and Towson at the tournament. Live stats for all games will be provided, while select games are available for audio and video streaming.
STRONG ARMS, BIG BATS
Junior Nicole D'Argento led Boston College from the circle and in the batter's box last week. As a pitcher, the Ashland, Mass. native totaled 16.2 innings in four appearances, registering three wins and a save. The righty held opponents to a .169 batting average, while tagging opposing pitchers for a .375 clip as hitter. D'Argento went 6-for-16, drove in two runs and scored three times.
Senior Ali Lynette-Krech slashed opposing pitchers for a .571 batting average. The captain produced eight hits in 14 plate appearances, scored five runs and drove in a pair. Lynette-Krech's .571 slugging percentage was third highest on the team.
Classmate and captain Brittany Wilkins delivered a team-leading six runs batted in, noting four in a 6-3 defeat of Florida Gulf Coast. The catcher's success came on 6-for-16 hitting (.375) and a .688 slugging percentage.
Absolutely on fire, sophomore Chelsea LoBue came off the bench to secure a 1.167 slugging percentage. In six at-bats, the Scarsdale, N.Y. product registered a home run, a double, four RBI and scored twice. With the Eagles facing a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh against St. Louis, LoBue hit her first homer to send the game to extras where BC claimed the win, 5-4.
LAST TIME OUT
The Eagles closed out the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament with a 7-1 victory over Tennessee-Martin on Sunday, Feb. 19. The win sealed the tournament trophy for BC, who defeated four of five opponents it faced on opening weekend.
Sophomore Tory Speer drove in three runs, going 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, and scored two of her own. D'Argento allowed only two hits over 4.2 innings, striking out four batters and senior Morgan Kidd no hit the Sky Hawks over 2.1 innings to earn a save.
SCOUTING REPORT
Morgan State (Friday, Feb. 24 - 10 a.m.)
The Bears were swept in their season-opening series with Gardner-Webb, 6-4, 8-0. Morgan St. had games scheduled with South Carolina St. and Winston-Salem St. on Feb. 18-19, but had not reported the results at the time of this release.
Charlotte (Friday, Feb. 24 - 12 p.m.)
The 49ers' lineup featured five players batting at .300 or greater through the first eight games, which saw Charlotte go 4-4. Chelsea Stamey leads the squad with a .500 average (5-for-10) and .700 slugging percentage. However, Brianna Gwaltney has the only two home runs and leads the team with seven RBI. Katie Watkins (2-2) and Lexi Betancourt (2-2) have both started four games. Watkins has lasted all seven innings on three occasions, striking out 23 batters in 26 innings, while Betancourt has 11 K in 25.1 innings.
Towson (Saturday, Feb. 25 - 10 a.m.)
The Tigers claimed only one of their first four games, falling in the first three, at the Hampton Inn Invitational. Brianna Jones' .417 batting average leads the squad, tallying five hits and two runs in 12 at-bats. Erica Stasch also has five hits and two runs, but posted a team-best four RBI and .533 slugging percentage. The Tigers looked to three different pitchers, with Katie Lingmai getting the only win. Lingmai made two appearances, went 1-0, struck out 13 batters and allowed three earned runs.
