Boston College women's fencing went 5-1, and the men's side compiled a 3-2 record in Northeast Fencing Conference competition on Saturday at Boston College's Flynn Recreation Complex.
The Eagles got a strong performance from the women's team, including a big win over conference powerhouse Brown. A young foil squad exceeded all expectations, going 8-1 against both MIT and Brandeis, while the sabre squad posted shutouts against Brandeis and Dartmouth. The epee squad provided the support needed to ensure success. Cara Hall in epee, Chelsea Rosenbauer in sabre, and Ryan Western in foil were the standouts.
The men's team posted three wins, against Brandeis, Vassar and Dartmouth but found itself on the short end of two 13-14 losses, against MIT and Brown.
"The one-bout losses are disappointing," head coach Syd Fadner said. "But I'm very pleased with the way the team performed overall. The epee squad in particular showed real grit -- unhappy with their 2-7 performance in the first round against MIT they came back with a 7-2 run against Brandeis and continued to perform solidly the rest of the day."
Peter Souders made his presence felt throughout the day finishing with a 14-0 record in sabre.
Close matches characterized the action for much of the day at the Heights with one or two bouts deciding seven meets.
