Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Seniors Anthony Melchionda and Kyle Prohovich and junior Rob Moir were selected as the captains of the 2012 Boston College baseball team, voted by their teammates, head coach Mike Gambino announced.
"I really like what the leadership of this team has done so far this year," Gambino said. "We talk a lot about how we want all our guys to learn to be leaders and consider themselves leaders. I think, as a club, we've done a great job so far.

Melchionda, who will play shortstop for the Eagles this season, led the 2011 team in hits (55), doubles (17), triples (3), total bases (81) and RBIs (34) and was second with a .304 batting average. The Braintree, Mass., native will be starting his third season in the infield, as he played third base as a junior and sophomore.
Prohovich is the Eagles' go-to guy out of the bullpen, appearing in 24 games last season. He was second on the team with a 3.46 ERA and three wins. He also made nine starts. The Weston, Mass., product was third on the team in appearances and strikeouts (34) and allowed 15 earned runs on 34 hits in 39.0 innings of work.
Moir, who hails from Seymour, Conn., appeared in 21 games as a sophomore. He had three hits on the year, including a pinch-hit, three-run home run at Wake Forest. As a redshirt freshman, he appeared in 21 games with six starts, batting .235. Gambino predicts Moir could see a lot of time at first base in 2011.
