No. 14 Field Hockey Overpowers Vermont in Season Opener

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Boston College field hockey team overpowered Vermont on Friday afternoon, earning a 5-1 victory on the road to open the season.
The Eagles' attack dominated in the season opener, as BC outshot Vermont, 29-6. Boston College put 20 shots on goal and three different Eagles scored in the outing. Senior Carla Tamer and sophomore Chapin Duke each scored twice, while senior Courtney Tavener added a goal of her own. Today's contest marked the first multiple-goal game for both Tamer and Duke.
As a team, the squad forced 11 corners, while allowing just two. The Eagles made the most of their corners in the game, as two of the team's five goals were recorded in that fashion.
BC kept possession of the ball for most of the first half. The squad jumped out to an early lead, as Duke redirected a pass from Nicole Schuster to find the back of the cage less than four minutes into the game.
The Eagles extended their lead to 2-0 on a penalty corner with just under 20 minutes left in the first half. Tavener input the ball to Paige Norris, whose solid stick stop allowed Tamer to send a hard drive from the top of the circle past the Vermont goalkeeper.
Tamer came through for the Eagles once again with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half, finding the back of the cage on yet another penalty corner. Norris and junior Jacqui Moorfield recorded the assists on the goal.
While the second half was more evenly matched, BC struck again just over a minute into play, as Tavener recorded an unassisted goal.
Less than three minutes later, Duke added another goal. Falling to the ground, she managed to get off a shot that would sneak past the opposing goalie, putting BC on top, 5-0.
The Catamounts got on the scoreboard with their first and only goal of the game with just over 22 minutes to play, as Emily Bastiaanse took a shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner that skidded past BC senior goalkeeper Nicole Barry.
The Eagles threatened to retaliate immediately, drawing the Vermont goalie out of her cage in chase of a loose ball, but the Catamounts were able to extinguish the threat.
Eagle freshmen Abby Bascetta, Hannah Nedeau, Emma Plasteras, Nicole Morris, Kati Orban and Sarah Hospodar saw action at the collegiate level for the first time today.
Barry recorded her first-ever collegiate decision, a win, in the cage for Boston College.
