No. 14 Field Hockey Shuts Out UMass

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The No. 14 Boston College field hockey squad earned a decisive, 5-0 victory against the University of Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon in a contest hosted by the University of Vermont.

BC put 11 shots on goal and outshot UMass, 19-5, in the team's second win in two days. The squad also forced 10 corners, while allowing just four. Four different Eagles found the back of the cage in the outing, as sophomore Chapin Duke netted two, while senior Courtney Tavener, junior Jacqui Moorfield and freshman Maura Keith each scored one goal apiece.

Senior goalkeeper Nicole Barry was solid in the cage once again for Boston College, tallying 62:25 minutes of play and making two saves to record the win.

Duke broke open the game just 35 seconds into the first half, as she gathered a bouncing ball in the circle that UMass struggled to clear and scored unassisted, putting BC up, 1-0.

Neither team was able to find the cage again before halftime, but Duke added to the Eagles' lead less than a minute into the second half, scoring on her own rebound in front of the UMass goalkeeper.

Moorfield made it a 3-0 game, as she registered a goal on a BC penalty corner with just over 33 minutes to play. Tavener and sophomore Paige Norris assisted on the goal.

With just over 14 minutes to play, the Eagles scored once again on a penalty corner. After UMass saved BC's first shot attempt, senior Carla Tamer gathered the rebound and found Tavener in front of the cage to extend Boston College's lead.

Keith scored the Eagles final goal of the game and the first goal of her collegiate career with less than four minutes remaining, as she redirected a shot from Tamer.

Boston College returns to action on Tuesday, August 30 in the team's home opener against Maine at 4 p.m.
