CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore PK Nate Freese hit a 41-yard field goal attempt to successfully conclude Boston College's fourth - and final - football scrimmage of the 2011 preseason training camp on Wednesday at Alumni Stadium.
Junior Hampton Hughes, who switched from wide receiver to defensive back just five days prior to the scrimmage, recorded two pass break-ups and one interception to lead a defensive effort that forced a total of four interceptions on 28 passing attempts from sophomore quarterback Chase Rettig.
"Coach Spaz said `we need you on defense,'" Hughes said after the scrimmage. "I said `I can do that.' It's a huge opportunity. I'm just going to go out every day and do the best I can."
Rettig completed 20-of-28 attempts for 176 yards on the afternoon.
Freshman DB Manny Asprilla led all defensive players with five tackles and one pass break-up - a long pass attempt that Asprilla deflected into redshirt freshman Sean Sylvia's hands for an interception. Redshirt freshman Dominique Williams and sophomore Jim Noel also recorded interceptions for the defense.
"Too many turnovers," head coach Frank Spaziani said. "Good that we got them on defense, but some of them were not forced."
LBs Kevin Pierre-Louis and Steele Devitto each registered one sack.
Junior WR Colin Larmond, Jr., led the receiving corps with 10 receptions for 89 yards. Sophomore Alex Amidon caught three passes for 29 yards, while redshirt freshman RB Tahj Kimble, sophomore WR Bobby Swigert and senior WR Ifeanyi Momah each caught multiple passes.
Junior running back Mike Javorski recorded 10 attempts for 32 yards. Sophomore Rolandan Finch carried the ball seven times for 26 yards while Kimble registered four attempts for 22 yards.
Senior Ryan Quigley punted four times, averaging 40 yards per punt, while his lone field-goal attempt - of 42 yards - missed.
QB Dave Shinskie completed 2-of-4 passing attemps for 28 yards, while Mike Marscovetra went 0-for-3.
There are 10 days to season's kickoff when Boston College hosts Northwestern in its season opener on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 12 p.m. in Alumni Stadium.
