Baseball Falls In Finale At Wake Forest, 4-3

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Boston College baseball team lost the series finale at Wake Forest, 4-3, on Mother's Day at the Wake Forest Baseball Park.
Sophomore Matt McGovern and freshman Tom Bourdon led BC (16-29, 7-19 ACC) at the plate with two hits apiece. Bourdon doubled and scored a run while McGovern had an RBI and also scored. Junior Andrew Lawrence hit a two-run homer, his fifth of the year. Freshman Eric Stevens worked 3.0 no-hit innings in relief and fanned four batters.
Matt Conway was the only Wake Forest (20-26, 10-14) player to have two hits in the game and both were doubles. He also had an RBI and scored a run. Steven Brooks drove in two runs. Justin Van Grouw got the win on the mound after throwing 2.1 innings of relief. He did not allow a hit and struck out three.
BC went ahead in the top of the first thanks to Lawrence's homer. McGovern hit a one-out single and with two down, Lawrence launched a 1-1 offering over the fence in right for a 2-0 BC lead.
Wake Forest got one of the runs back in the fourth but left more stranded. The Deacons loaded the bases with no outs thanks to a single and a pair of walks. Ryan Lloyd drove in a run with a single through the right side and then a pop up provided the first out. Sophomore Hunter Gordon then got Brett Armour to hit a liner right at junior Anthony Melchionda at third. He caught it and stepped on the bag for an inning-ending double play.
Wake pushed across three more runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Pat Blair and Conor Keniry walked to start the inning and then a wild pitch moved them both over a base. Brooks made it count with a two-run single on the next pitch and then Conway snuck an RBI double down the third base line to drive him in.
The Eagles used a little small ball in the seventh to make it a one-run game but couldn't score the rest of the way. Bourdon led off with a double to the gap in left and senior Matt Hamlet did his job by moving him over with a groundout to second. McGovern drove him in with another groundout.
Wake Forest's Michael Dimock shut the door on the Eagles by throwing perfect eighth and ninth innings.
BC takes the week off for finals before returning to action Saturday, May 14. It hosts LeMoyne at 4 p.m. at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
