WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Boston College baseball team lost the second game of a three-game set at Wake Forest, 15-5, Saturday afternoon at the Wake Forest Baseball Park.
All nine Demon Deacons (19-26, 9-14 ACC) had hits on the day and seven of them recorded RBIs. Pat Blair led the way by going 3-for-5 with a double, homer and three RBIs. Ryan Lloyd was 3-for-4 with two doubles while driving in a pair and Mark Rhine had two hits and also drove in three runs. Tim Cooney got the win on the mound after allowing two runs on four hits in 7.2 innings of work.
Sophomore Rob Moir belted his first career home run as an Eagle. He hit a three-run shot in the eighth when he came on to pinch hit. Freshman Tom Bourdon went 2-for-3 with an RBI while senior Garret Smith and junior Andrew Lawrence both had two hits and a double.
BC (16-28, 7-18) had a chance to put runs on the board in the top of the first but came up empty. Sophomore Matt McGovern hit a one-out single and then Smith hit the wall in left for a double to put both men in scoring position. Cooney buckled down and got a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat.
Blair used that momentum and rewarded Cooney with a leadoff homer in the bottom half of the first on the first pitch he saw to give Wake a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles tied the game with a run of their own in the second. Junior Marc Perdios led off with a double that one-hopped the wall in left-center and then freshman Nate LaPointe reached on an error to put two men on base. Senior Matt Hamlet sacrificed them both into scoring position, but a fielder's choice cut off a run at the plate for the second out. Junior Brad Zapenas hit the gap in left for an RBI double, but the ball bounced over the wall which prevented a second run from scoring.
Wake got the run right back in the bottom half with a Brett Armour RBI single.
BC tied the game again with a run in the fourth. Perdios drew a leadoff walk and LaPointe singled to put the first two batters on base, then a deep fly out to right put them on the corners. LaPointe was picked off of first for the second out but Bourdon hit an infield single to score the run.
The Demon Deacons then went on to score 10 unanswered runs to put the game out of reach and it started in the bottom of the fourth. Wake loaded the bases with one out and Armour walked to force a run home. Rhine grounded into a fielder's choice to score the other run and make it 4-2.
Wake added four more runs in the fifth. After loading the bases with nobody out, Lloyd hit a two-run double to right. Rhine then hit the hole on the left side for a single with two outs to bring in two more runs to build the lead to 8-2.
Mac Williamson added to the lead with a two-run homer in the sixth. Conor Keniry recorded an RBI single in the seventh and Steven Brooks hit an RBI double to make it 12-2.
BC posted three runs in the top of the eighth. Lawrence led off with a double and then senior Mike Sudol reached with one out by a throwing error. With two outs, Moir came on to pinch hit and launched the first pitch he saw over the right field fence to cut the deficit to 12-5 before Wake scored three more times in the bottom half of the frame.
The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
