College Park, Md. – The Boston College softball team dropped a pair of one-run games against Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Robert E. Taylor Park. The Eagles (10-21, 5-5 ACC) led late in both contests, but the Terrapins (25-12, 3-3 ACC) scored in their final at-bats to steal wins away from BC, 4-3 and 1-0.
Freshman Amanda Horowitz (2-7) struck out a career-high seven batters, walked three and gave up five hits and two earned runs in 6.1 innings of a losing effort of game one.
Senior Allison Gage (4-9) shouldered the loss in game two, lasting all six innings, striking out two and giving up fours hits. Freshman Tory Speer drove in two runs for the Eagles, hitting two doubles to go 2-for-6 on the day.
Sophomore Nicole D’Argento tallied the other RBI and scored once for Boston College.
For Maryland, Kerry Hickey (10-7) threw all seven innings of the first game, striking out seven, walking two and allowing three earned runs on five hits. Ashley Czechner (10-1) earned the win in game two, striking out three batters and allowing one hit in two innings of work.
In game one, the Eagles got on the board first with two runs in the third. D’Argento hit a one-out double down the left field line, but advanced to third after juniors Ali Lynette-Krech drew a walk and Brittany Wilkins was hit by a pitch. Speer’s double to right plated the runners on second and third and kept runners in scoring position for BC. Maryland got out of the inning without further damage on a fielder’s choice at third and foul out to first.
The Terps scored one run in the third. Candice Beards reached on an error at third and was moved up to third on a double to center from Kathy McLaughlin. Vangie Galindo walked to load the bases. The Eagles got Beards out at home on a fielder’s choice from Sara Acosta, but McLaughlin was able to come around for the score when BC tried to get Galindo at second. Horowitz struck out Bree Hanafin and got Lexi Carroll to ground out to third to end the inning.
Boston College added a run in the top of the seventh, 3-1. Junior Lizzy Ploen led off with a double to center, took third on a wild pitch and scored on D’Argento’s sac fly to center.
Maryland tallied three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the win, 4-3. Beards walked and was pinch run for by Amanda McCann. After McLaughlin lined out to right, an error at third allowed Galindo to reach and McCann to move up to third. Galindo took second and both runners were driving in on Acosta’s single to center field, tying the game, 3-3. Hanafin stepped up and hit a walk-off triple to center.
Game two went scoreless through five and a half innings, before Maryland scored the game’s only run in the bottom half of the sixth. McLaughlin led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a sac bunt, before being pinch run for by Ghent. Acosta then singled to shallow right, enabling Ghen to come around for the winning run, 1-0.
