DURHAM, N.C. - Senior Matt Hamlet went 4-for-4 and freshman Tom Bourdon drove in a career-high four runs as the Boston College baseball team lost at Duke, 10-6, Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The second game of the series will be played Saturday at 1 p.m. and will be televised live by FOX Sports South/FOX Sports Carolinas, Sun Sports and CSN Mid-Atlantic. NESN will run the game on tape delay at 4 p.m. following Bruins coverage.
Hamlet hit four singles on the day with an RBI and a run scored. Bourdon was 1-for-3 and drove in his runs with a two-run single, a sac fly and a fielder's choice. Junior Marc Perdios went 3-for-5 with two doubles and scored three times while senior Garret Smith and sophomore Matt McGovern both went 2-for-5.
The Eagles (11-16, 4-8 ACC) got on the board first with a run in the top of the second. Perdios got things started with a one-out double inside the right field line and then with two down, Hamlet singled to center to bring him home.
Will Piwnica-Worms got that run back immediately in the bottom half of the inning for Duke with a leadoff solo home run over the monster in left.
The Blue Devils scored three more times in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Dennis O'Grady led off and battled at the plate for a double down the third base line and then Jeff Kremer singled and got to second on an overthrow to the cutoff man in the infield to put two in scoring position. Chris Marconcini brought both of them home with a single to right to give Duke its first lead, 3-1. Marconcini reached third on an errant pickoff throw and a stolen base before Anthony D'Alessandro drove him in with a single.
BC got one of those runs back in the fourth. Sophomore Matt Watson hit a one-out single and Hamlet followed with one of his own to put runners on the corners. Bourdon drove in the run with a sac fly to center.
Duke crossed the plate two more times in the fifth to build a four-run lead. Kremer drew a leadoff walk and then Jordan Betts legged out a triple to the gap in right to make it 5-2. D'Alessandro added to the inning with a two-out RBI double that one-hopped the wall in left-center.
The Eagles responded with two of their own in the top of the sixth. Perdios roped a double down the line in left on an 0-2 count with one out and Watson walked to put a pair on base. Hamlet singled the other way but a mistake on the base paths cost BC an out and put men on second and third with two away. Bourdon came through again with a two-run single up the middle while in the hole 0-2 to cut the deficit to 6-4.
The trading of two runs continued in the bottom half of the sixth. Duke loaded the bases with one out and Marconcini hit an infield single to plate a run. Betts brought in the other with a sac fly to make it a four-run lead once again, 8-4.
Duke added another pair of runs in the seventh to make it a six-run cushion. D'Alessandro led off with a single and after a sac bunt, another single put runners on the corners. A passed ball on ball four allowed D'Alessandro to score and then a soft chopper to third turned into an infield single and an RBI for O'Grady.
BC picked up two runs in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to 10-6 but that is as close as it would get. Perdios singled to start the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Hamlet singled up the middle to put runners on the corners and Bourdon brought home a run with a fielder's choice. Junior Brad Zapenas reached on a dropped pop up which put runners on the corners with two outs then sophomore Matt McGovern roped an RBI single to cut it to four runs.
Duke (19-14, 4-9) had four players with three hits in the game. Kremer was 3-for-3 with two runs, Marconcini was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, D'Alessandro was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Angelo LaBruna went 3-for-4 with two runs.
Dillon Haviland got the win on the mound after throwing 5.2 innings. He allowed four runs on eight hits.
