Storrs, Conn. - Freshman Tory Speer capped a seven-run, fifth inning rally by crushing a pitch well beyond the left field fence for a grand slam as the Boston College softball team defeated Connecticut, 9-6, at Burrill Field on Wednesday. The Trabuco Canyon, Calif. product went 2-for-4, drove in four runs and scored twice for the Eagles (10-19, 5-3 ACC).
Freshman Amanda Horowitz (2-6) matched her career-high four strikeouts, threw four innings and gave up one earned run to claim the win.
Senior Allison Gage collected her first save of year, tossing three innings, striking out four and allowing two earned runs.
Kiki Saveriano (7-11) shouldered the loss for the Huskies (13-16, 3-2 Big East), lasting 4.2 innings, striking out six batters, walking two and allowing six earned runs.
Four players batted .500 for the Eagles. Senior Carolyn Jones went 1-for-2, posted two RBI and scored, while junior Ali Lynette-Krech and sophomore Maria Pandolfo both hit 2-for-4, scored once and drove in a run.
The Huskies threatened in the first after Amy DeLuca drove a two-out single off the fence and advanced to third on a single to center from Andrea Huelsenbeck. With the count, 3-1, Horowitz got Silva swinging to get out of the jam.
Connecticut broke a scoreless tie open with three runs in the second inning. Amy Vaughn singled to short and Audrey Grinnell was hit by a pitch. A ball hit by Marissa Guches got past the Eagles at second allowed Vaughn to come around the bases for the first run. Both runners tagged-up on a foul out near first base and were driven in on a double down the left field line from Jennifer Ward.
In the fourth inning UConn stretched its lead to four, 4-0. Maddy Schiappa reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. An error at short put runners on the corners and when junior Brittany Wilkins caught Julianne Towers stealing second, Schiappa beat the throw back to home.
Seven runs in the fifth put the Eagles on top, 7-4. Freshman Ronnie Mae Ayers delivered a pinch hit single to the pitcher and was moved up to second by a bunt from Pandolfo. Junior Lizzy Ploen then rattled off several pitches with a full count, eventually drawing a walk to load the bases. Jones hit a blooper over the shortstop's glove to plate Ayers and Pandolfo.
Lynette-Krech kept things going with a single through the right side, bringing in Ploen. Wilkins would walk to load the bases for Speer, who scortched her sixth home run and the 37th for BC on the year - third most in program history.
Three singles in the bottom of the fifth plated a run for the Huskies. Kim Silva's hit up the middle was followed by Brittany Duclos' hit through the right side. Vaughan then chipped one to center to plate Silva and bring UConn within two, 7-5.
Connecticut inched closer, 7-6, with another run in the sixth. Towers emerged from a battle with Gage by doubling down the left field line and was pinch run for by Kathleen Brenneman. Ward then singled to center to score Brenneman. Gage responded by getting DeLuca swinging and Huelsenbeck to ground out to second to end the inning.
Boston College added two runs in the top of the seventh, 9-6. Wilkins reached on a fielder's choice and was pinch run for by freshman Nicole Koszowski. Speer's single up the middle was followed by senior Gemma Ypparila's infield single to load the bases. A sac fly from Ayers advanced the runners, plating Koszowski, and Pandolfo singled to left, bringing in Speer, for a pair of insurance runs.
The Eagles retired the side to end the game and earn their sixth road win of the season.
"It was a good win today," Head Coach Jennifer Finley said. "We responded to their early runs by making the necessary offensive adjustments mid-way through and we ended the day with solid defense."
BC will resume ACC play with a road trip at Maryland from April 9-10. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m., as is Sunday's game. Live stats will be available through GameTracker.
