Chestnut Hill, Mass. - A two-out, seventh-inning rally was cut short as the Boston College softball team was defeated by Bryant University, 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Shea Field. The Eagles (11-25) were led by freshman Alana Dimaso, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Brittany Wilkins, who batted 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Junior Morgan Kidd (1-6) shouldered the loss for BC, allowing three runs on six hits and giving up one walk in 2.1 innings.
Freshman Amanda Horowitz threw 4.2 innings of relief, struck out two batters, walked three and allowed one earned run on six hits.
Samantha Houseal (11-7) tossed 6.2 innings, struck out two batters, walked one and allowed one earned run on seven hits to get the win for the Bulldogs (21-16).
Jennifer Jacob earned the save by throwing one pitch to get Bryant out of the jam in the seventh.
Both sides scored a run in the first inning. Bryant scored when Guy singled to second, moved up on a sac bunt, took third on a wild pitch and came in on a sac fly to second.
Junior Ali Lynette-Krech put the Eagles got on the board by hitting a single up the middle, advancing to third on a throwing error to first and taking home when the Bulldog's catcher tried to throw freshman Tory Speer stealing second.
Bryant took the lead, 2-1, in the second. Corder walked, was pushed up on a sac bunt and moved to third on a single to left center before coming in on another single.
In the third, the Bulldogs added another run when Mable singled to center and was driven on Weinberg's double to right center for the 3-1 lead.
A fourth-inning homer from McCart in the fourth extended the Bryant advantage, 4-1, before the Bulldogs tacked on two more in the top of the seventh. Bowen reached when a ball to center field was dropped and advanced to third following a single from Mable and a sacrifice bunt. Two straight singles plated Bowen and Mable and put the Bulldogs up, 6-1.
Junior Lizzy Ploen and Dimaso singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh. The Bryant managed to get under a foul from sophomore Nicole D'Argento and get Lynette-Krech to ground out at short - advancing the runners - to put the Eagles in a two-out hole. Wilkins single through the right side drove in Ploen, before Speer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Gemma Ypparila hit an infield blooper that was dropped by the second baseman to score another run, 6-3, and keep the bases loaded.
Sophomore Maria Pandolfo stepped up and handled 16 straight pitches against Houseal, sending the last one zipping in front of the left field pole just foul, before Jacob was called in for relief to throw change up to end the game.
The Eagles continue conference play with a series at North Carolina from April 23-24.
