Baseball Loses To Clemson, 9-2

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team lost the series opener to Clemson, 9-2, Friday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
The series will conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon. The second game will be played 30 minutes after the completion of the first. Impending weather on Saturday night and Sunday morning forced the move of the Sunday afternoon finale.
Sophomore Matt McGovern had his sixth-straight multi-hit game as he went 2-for-5 for the Eagles (13-18, 6-9 ACC). He scored both of BC's runs and is now 18-for-30 during his current streak. Senior Garret Smith was 2-for-4 with a double and junior Anthony Melchionda reached base in all four plate appearances with three walks and an RBI double.
Clemson got a pair of runs in the first two innings to take the early edge. John Hinson started the game off with a leadoff home run when he turned on a 3-1 inside offering and sent it off the scoreboard in right. Will Lamb added a solo shot of his own in the second to make it 2-0.
BC got one run back in the bottom of the third but could have gotten more. McGovern and Smith reached base with a pair of singles and then Melchionda walked to load the bases with nobody out. Junior Andrew Lawrence brought in a run with a fielder's choice which put runners on the corners, but a 3-6-1 double play ended the threat.
The Eagles tied the game in the fifth with a two-out run. McGovern notched another base hit with one out and then stole second to get himself into scoring position with two down. Melchionda went the other way with a pitch and dropped it over the right fielder's head for an RBI double.
Clemson then scored seven unanswered runs to take the win. It scored three times in the top of the sixth to reclaim the lead, 5-2. Richie Shaffer snuck a double over the third base bag with one out and Brad Miller walked to put men on first and second. A sac bunt moved them both into scoring position with two outs and Spencer Kieboom delivered a two-run double to give the lead back to Clemson. Chris Epps brought in another run with an RBI single.
After another run in the seventh, the Tigers pulled away with three more runs in the eighth to make it a 9-2 ballgame. Clemson loaded the bases with no outs and a 4-3 groundout provided one of the runs. Pohl doubled to the gap in left with two outs to bring in two more.
Pohl went 2-for-5 for Clemson (20-13, 7-9) with two doubles and three RBIs. Kieboom had a pair of doubles and two RBIs and Hinson also drove in a pair. Dominic Leone got the win on the hill after throwing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on five hits.
