COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A bases loaded balk in the bottom of the seventh inning was the deciding run as Maryland defeated the Boston College baseball team, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
The rubber match of the series will be Sunday at noon.
Senior Mike Sudol went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run and is now 6-for-9 in the series. Freshman Tom Bourdon had a pair of hits with an RBI.
Senior Nate Bayuk was hit with the loss on the mound after throwing 4.0 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits.
The Eagles put up a run in the top of the first to get ahead early. Junior Brad Zapenas started things with a leadoff single and stole second to get himself into scoring position. Sophomore Matt Watson walked with two outs and Zapenas on third to put runners on the corners. BC scored the run when Carroll faked to third on a pickoff and went back to first. The ball got away from the first baseman and allowed Zapenas to score.
BC (7-9, 1-4 ACC) started the second inning with consecutive singles from Sudol and senior Garret Smith, but a 6-4-3 double play put two outs on the board. Bourdon still cashed in a run with an RBI single past a diving second baseman to make it a 2-0 BC lead.
Senior Dave Laufer started on the bump and threw 2.2 perfect innings before Maryland started a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. Jack Cleary was hit by a pitch and then Charlie White singled to put men on first and second. Holland dropped an RBI single down the line in left to cut the Eagles' lead in half.
The Terrapins scored two more times in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Tomo Delp led off with a single to left and then a one-out single on a hit and run by Kyle Convissar put runners on the corners. Rodriguez dropped a bloop single over shortstop for an RBI single and a bunt single by Wacker loaded the bases. Cleary hit a sac fly to center to give Maryland the lead.
The Eagles scored another unearned run in the sixth to tie the game. With runners on first and third and two outs, Carroll tried a pickoff move to third and short hopped it which allowed junior Marc Perdios to score.
Maryland scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Cleary led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Holland got an infield single to put two men on base and then a walk loaded them with two outs. The game-winning run was allowed to come home on a balk after the ball slipped out of the pitcher's hand during his delivery.
Alfredo Rodriguez led the Terrapins (10-9, 1-4) by going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Ryan Holland also had two hits and an RBI. David Carroll got the win after tossing 7.0 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. Wacker picked up the save.
