CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College football team took to the field once again Tuesday afternoon underneath the cover of the Bubble for the first of 15 spring practices.
The spring semester marks the arrival of two new faces on the team in DL Mehdi Abdesmad and CB Al Louis-Jean. Abdesmad will have a chance to compete for a spot on the defensive line which looks to replace three starters from the 2010 season, while Louis-Jean will look to make his mark on a solid group of defensive backs.
The offense will be led by All-ACC RB Montel Harris who looks to cement himself atop the Boston College and ACC record books while running behind an offensive line that returns three players who have made starts. QB Chase Rettig enters his sophomore campaign looking to develop further with the help of receivers Bobby Swigert, Alex Amidon, and Ifeanyi Momah along with the return of big-play threat Colin Larmond, Jr. With the arrival of Minnesota Vikings QB coach Kevin Rogers as the new offensive coordinator, the BC offense looks to rise once again to the top of the ACC.
The defense, anchored by consensus All-American LB Luke Kuechly, returns six starters from a squad that ranked first in the country in rushing defense and 13th in total defense. DT Kaleb Ramsey is the only returning starter for the defensive line, but many players have made significant contributions including DE Max Holloway, DE Kasim Edebali and DT Dillon Quinn. Kuechly will control the middle of the field and LB Kevin Pierre-Louis will patrol the outside after a strong freshman season in which he started all 13 games. The defensive backs return three starters in Donnie Fletcher, Jim Noel, and Okechukwu Okoroha with many solid candidates looking to take up the remaining spot.
Third-year head coach Frank Spaziani looks to expand on the success of last season's 7-6 team that won five consecutive games to end the regular season, allowing them to go to their 12th consecutive bowl game.
The spring season will culminate in the annual Jay McGillis Spring Game, scheduled for April 16 at Alumni Stadium.
