Baseball Drops Finale At No. 1 Florida, 7-2

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Boston College baseball team lost its series finale at No. 1 Florida, 7-2, Sunday afternoon at McKethan Stadium.
Juniors Anthony Melchionda and Marc Perdios both went 2-for-4 in the game and Melchionda had an RBI. Sophomore Matt Watson also went 2-for-4 and classmate Matt McGovern had a pinch hit RBI double in the ninth.
Senior John Leonard got the loss on the mound. He threw 6.0 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. Four of those runs came in the second inning.
Nick Zunino went 3-for-4 for Florida (7-0) with a double, a home run and two RBI. Daniel Pigott went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Nolan Fontana hit a two-run triple. Karsten Whitson earned the win after tossing 5.1 innings and allowing one run on five hits.
Florida went ahead early with four runs in the bottom of the second. Zunino led off and hit a double off the wall in left-center and was sacrificed to third on the next play. Ben McMahan walked to put runners on the corners with one out and then Kamm Washington hit a lazy grounder to third that went for an RBI single.
Fontana continued the rally when he turned on a 1-0 pitch and dropped it down the right field line for a two-run triple. Josh Adams drove Fontana in with a sac fly to center for the fourth run of the frame.
The Gators added another run in the third to push the lead to 5-0. Brian Johnson hit a one-out triple off the glove of a diving Tom Bourdon in center and after the second out, McMahan hit a bloop that landed behind the pitcher and in front of the second baseman for an infield hit.
The Eagles (2-4) got on the board with a run in the top of the sixth. Perdios and Watson hit consecutive singles with one out to put men on first and second, then a wild pitch moved them both into scoring position. Melchionda fired a pitch back up the middle for an RBI single.
Zunino added a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 7-1 lead.
In the ninth, sophomore Rob Moir singled through the right side and then McGovern doubled to the wall in right-center to bring him all the way around to score.
The Eagles are off until Friday and begin their spring break trip in Daytona Beach to face Bethune-Cookman at 6 p.m.
