Freshman Alana Dimaso went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs to lead the Boston College Softball in a losing effort, 8-6, against the Michigan State Spartans on the front-end of a doubleheader at day two of the Lead-Off Classic in Deland, Fla.
Senior Alison Kooistra reached on two-of-three at-bats, driving in two runs and scoring another of her own against the Spartans (2-1).
Sophomore Nicole D'Argento (1-1) provided two innings of work, allowing five runs - two earned - on three hits, with one strikeout and a walk. Michigan State's L. Kramer (2-0) earned the win with four Ks, two walks and three earned runs in five innings pitched.
Both sides went 1-2-3 through the top of the second, before MSU unleashed a five-run bottom frame for the lead, 5-0. A single up the middle and a walk put runners on for Williams to drive in a run with a double to right center. With one out, another run was plated on a single to the left from Grant, who advanced to second on the throw. Bracamonte then reached base and took second on a botched infield fly, scoring two more runs. Bracamonte moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an Eagle fielding error, before BC was able to close out the inning.
The foes went scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when the Spartans added one run to increase their advantage, 6-0. The Spartans drew a lead-off walk, executed a sac bunt and took third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Bracamonte singled through the right side to tally the run.
In the fifth, Boston College tallied three runs and allowed two more, bringing the score to 8-3. Senior Gemma Ypparila and junior Ali Lynette-Krech drew opening walks for BC. A one out single to left from junior Alison Kooistra plated Ypparila, where a throw to home allowed the two base runners to advance on a play. Facing an 0-2 count, freshman Alana Dimaso doubled to left for the Eagles' final runs of top half.
The Eagles added three runs in the sixth, moving the score to 8-6. A pair of singles from Wilkins and Lynette-Krech split up by a walk from Ypparila loaded the bases for Boston College. With one out, sophomore Maria Pandolfo doubled to right center, scoring Ypparila and senior Carolyn Jones who had pinch run for Wilkins. A pitching change from the Spartans did not prevent Kooistra from driving in the third run of the inning with a single to center.
Boston College denied Michigan State in the bottom half of the sixth, but were blanked in the top of the seventh to end the game.
The Eagles will meet the Hatters in the second half of the doubleheader today at 6:30 p.m.
