CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Matt Humphrey led Boston College with 15 points as the Eagles lost to Penn State, 62-54, Wednesday night in front of 4,326 fans at Conte Forum as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Humphrey was 5-for-6 from the foul line and had four rebounds. Sophomore Gabe Moton scored 10 points for the second-straight game and also went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. He had four assists and no turnovers in 36 minutes of action. Freshman Ryan Anderson led the team with six rebounds.
It was the first loss for BC in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in six games.
Boston College jumped out to 12-4 lead in the first 5:37 of the game on the heels of Kyle Caudill's six-straight points to start. Moton and Anderson both hit 3-pointers in that run to provide the eight-point cushion.
Penn State responded with 10 unanswered points over the next two minutes to take a 14-12 lead with 12:13 on the clock. Jermaine Marshall scored five points in the run, including the go-ahead 3-pointer. Graduate student John Cahill ended BC's 4:58 scoring drought when he hit a shot from beyond the arc to give the Eagles the lead again. BC took a 29-26 lead into the locker room at the half.
Penn State's Tim Frazier jump-started the Nittany Lions out of the break, scoring five of their six-straight points after the opening whistle. The Eagles responded with nine unanswered points of their own to build a six-point lead, 38-32, with 14:42 left in the game. Freshman Lonnie Jackson connected on a pair of 3-pointers to spark the run.
The Nittany Lions climbed back into the game and tied it for the second time, 42-42, when Frazier connected on a 3-pointer with 10:22 left. After a couple of more ties, Frazier hit another three to help build a four-point lead for Penn State.
The Nittany Lions led the rest of the way as their defense buckled down. PSU allowed just one BC basket in the final 9:42 - a 3-pointer by Cahill with 18 seconds left - to aid in a 20-9 run to end the game.
Frazier and Marshall led Penn State (6-2) with 22 points apiece. Frazier also had five assists while Marshall had eight rebounds.
The Eagles (2-5) will host Boston University Saturday at 2 p.m. at Conte Forum.
