CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Kristin Igoe was selected as a member of the 2010-11 U.S. Women's National Lacrosse team after three days of tryouts at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County from July 30-August 1. The squad consists of 36 players and will train to compete in the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup. Since 1986, the six-time World Cup champions Team USA has won either silver or gold.
"What we wanted to accomplish was to gather 36 players that we felt made up the best group as opposed to looking at the most individual talent," Team USA and Georgetown coach Ricky Fried said. "Who played well together, worked well and competed on a consistent basis. It was a competitive tryout, the most competitive I've seen in my four years here. We had some hard decisions to make, in a good way, and we feel lucky to have the group that we have for this year."
Igoe is the only Boston College player ever to be selected to the prestigious team. She will join Head Coach Bowen Holden, who is an assistant for Team USA, and her USA teammates the weekend of October 8-10, 2010 in Boston, MA for the annual Stars & Stripes Weekend. Boston College will also be participating in the event and will have the opportunity to compete against Team USA.
"I'm extremely proud of Kristin's accomplishment. She has and continues to represent Boston College in an incredible way. Her work ethic, competitive spirit, and coachability make her invaluable to our program. I look forward to working with her on the US team and at BC as we work to compete even more in the ACC and beyond," said Holden.
A starter the past two years, Igoe is a strong anchor at midfield. Last season she recorded 35 goals and 11 assists for 46 points. She was third on the team in goals and tied for second in assists. During 2009, she had 40 goals and 10 assists for 50 points. Both years she was named to the All-ACC Team and was a 1st Team Regional All-American. She was red-shirted for her freshman year for medical reasons and will look to complete her eligibility in 2012.
Boston College's new Associate Head Coach Acacia Walker, Maryland '05, was also named to the team. It will be her ninth year as a member of the national teams program. In 2009, she helped guide the World Cup Team to a gold medal by defeating Australia 8-7 in Prague, Czech Republic
