Assistant coach Steve Englert will remain on the Boston College baseball staff, announced by head coach Mike Gambino.
Englert has spent the last nine seasons as an assistant coach at the Heights and works primarily with the catchers and as a hitting coach.
"We are extremely lucky and excited to have Steve Englert, a fellow BC alumnus, remain with us," Gambino said. "I don't think you can find anyone who loves BC and this program, or who cares about the players more than Steve. On top of that, he's a great baseball person who has coached at the highest levels both in college and summer ball. He will be a great resource for planning practices and making line ups and in-game moves. He is also considered one of the best catching coaches around. His track record of developing catchers speaks for itself."
Englert, a 1987 Boston College graduate, guided Tony Sanchez to the No. 4 overall pick in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, the highest pick ever from BC. Sanchez came in as an unheralded recruit and with Englert's help, became an All-American and one of the best defensive prospects in the country. To fill the void left by Sanchez, Englert brought Garret Smith under his wing and transformed the shortstop into the starting catcher last season.
"Steve is a tremendous coach," Smith said. "He has a great feel for the game because he played and has been coaching for a long time. He has an incredible grasp on what he is doing and he is a players' coach. He likes to have fun and work hard at the same time and that is a really good combination to have. We get a lot done because he likes to get after it in such an exciting way."
Englert also provides a vital link from BC to the Cape Cod Baseball League, as he has coached the Harwich Mariners for the past 13 seasons. In the summer of 2008, Englert led the Mariners to its first Cape League title since 1987.
"Anyone who has ever had a chance to play for him absolutely loves him and is fiercely loyal to him," Gambino added. "The reaction I got from both current and former players when they found out he was going to stay was overwhelmingly positive. I can't say enough how much it means to our program and to me personally to have `Coach E' remain on our staff."
