Four Eagles Picked On Second Day Of MLB Draft

Four Boston College baseball players were selected on the second day of the 2010 MLB Draft on Tuesday. LHP Pat Dean was drafted in the third round, INF Mickey Wiswall was selected in the seventh, RHP Kevin Moran was taken in the ninth round and senior OF Robbie Anston was drafted in the 26th.
Dean was taken off the board by the Minnesota Twins with the 20th pick of the third round (102nd overall) of the draft while Wiswall was the 17th pick of the seventh round (222nd overall) by the Seattle Mariners. The Chicago White Sox took Moran with the 13th selection of the ninth round (278th overall) while the Mariners took Anston with the 17th pick in the 26th round (792nd overall).
It marks the first time in program history that three players have been taken in the first 10 rounds of the draft.
ABOUT DEAN
A hard-throwing lefty with tremendous control, Dean went 5-2 this season with a 4.75 ERA in 12 starts. He tossed 77.2 innings and allowed 42 runs - 41 earned - on 80 hits. He struck out 62 batters and only issued 14 walks.
The Naugatuck, Conn., native led the Eagles in ERA, opposing batting average (.275), innings pitched and strikeouts. He was named ACC Pitcher of the Week on March 15 after throwing 8.0 scoreless innings at Miami in a shutout win.
In his BC career, Dean is 13-7 with a 4.55 ERA. He has struck out 172 batters and walked a mere 39. His strikeout number ranks ninth all-time at Boston College. In 2009, he fanned 90 batters which is the third-most among the school's single-season leaders.
Dean is the sixth player in BC history to be taken in the top three rounds of the draft, joining Tony Sanchez (2009, first), Mike Belfiore (2009, Comp Round A), Chris Lambert (2001, first), Sean McGowan (1999, third) and Gary Matz (1968, second).
ABOUT WISWALL
A power hitting lefty who can play both corners of the infield, Wiswall smashed 19 home runs this year which was the most since 2001 and the second-most in a single season. He also recorded 61 RBI and batted .301 with 56 runs, 14 doubles, three triples and seven steals. He slugged a team-best .627 and had an on-base percentage of .398.
The 56 runs he scored this season ranks fourth on the single season charts. Wiswall also ranks second at Boston College in career homers (37), third in RBI (152) and hits (208) and eighth in runs (133).
The Stoneham, Mass., product was an All-ACC First Team selection and a NEIBA All-New England Team honoree. As a sophomore in 2009, Wiswall was an All-ACC Second Team honoree and an All-Northeast Region Team member. He was also named to the Austin Regional All-Tournament T eam and the ACC All-Tournament Team.
ABOUT MORAN
A tall, fiery right-hander who can hit the mid-90s, Moran was second on the team with 27 appearances in 2010 and he also started three games. He led the team in wins with an 8-5 record and had a 7.92 ERA on the season. Moran pitched 50.0 innings and allowed 47 runs - 44 earned - on 67 hits while striking out 29 batters and walking 41.
Moran did not allow a run in his final four appearances of the season, a total of 5.1 innings. He had his best outing against Miami (5/27) in the ACC Championship, coming on in the ninth and throwing 3.1 innings of no-hit baseball to get the win in extra innings. He struck out one and walked a batter.
The Yarmouthport, Mass., native emerged as BC's go-to reliever as a sophomore, finishing with a 5-2 record and a 2.75 ERA in 52.1 innings of work. Moran's eight wins in 2010 are tied for the sixth-most in a single season at Boston College and his 15 career wins rank ninth.
ABOUT ANSTON
One of the best leadoff hitters in the ACC, Anston ranks 10th at Boston College with 122 career runs scored. He started all 58 games in center field and as the leadoff man and also started all 60 in 2009. Anston led the Eagles in doubles (21), triples (6) and steals (18), was second in batting (.324), on-base percentage (.409), runs (55) and hits (77) and third in slugging (.525), total bases (125) and walks (25). He also hit five home runs and drove in 35 runs.
As a junior, Anston set the single-season BC hits record with 85 and was an All-ACC Second Team selection.
