Baseball Loses Series Finale at No. 18 Virginia Tech, 10-5

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Junior Mickey Wiswall hit a pair of solo home runs but the Boston College baseball team lost, 10-5, Sunday afternoon at English Field.
It was Wiswall's third multiple home run game of his career. Sophomore Brad Zapenas went 2-for-3 with an RBI and junior Garret Smith drove in two runs.
Buddy Sosnoskie went 4-for-5 for the Hokies (32-14, 14-10 ACC) with a triple and two RBI. Sean Ryan was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs and Steve Domecus went 2-for-4 and drove in three. Joe Mantiply got the win in a spot start after throwing 5.2 innings and allowing four runs on five hits.
Virginia Tech scored a run in the bottom of the first for the third time in the series. Sosnoskie hit a triple hard off the wall in left-center and then Domecus brought him in with a sac fly to right.
Wiswall tied the game in the top of the fourth when the fierce wind on the field blew a fly ball to left over the wall to make it 1-1.
Virginia Tech responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead. Austin Wates led off with a double off the wall in left-center and moved over to third with a groundout to the right side. An error by the third baseman allowed Wates to score to give the Hokies a 2-1 lead.
Three consecutive singles with one out allowed another run to score for the Hokies in the fifth to push the lead to two runs. Domecus came up with the third base hit of the inning and the RBI.
BC scored three times in the sixth to take its first lead of the series, 4-3. Senior John Spatola singled with one out and then sophomore Anthony Melchionda did the same with two to put runners on the corners. Sophomore Andrew Lawrence was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Zapenas forced a run in when he drew a walk. Smith gave BC the lead with a two-run single to center.
The Hokies came right back and scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead. Ronnie Shaban and Tim Smalling started the inning with consecutive singles and after the next two batters struck out, Andrew Rash singled to center to tie the game. Ryan and Sosnoskie added a pair of singles to extend the lead to three.
Michael Seaborn put some more runs on the board for the Hokies in the seventh with a two-run homer with two outs to make it 9-4. Then three-straight base hits with one out gave Virginia Tech another run in the eighth.
Wiswall connected on his second homer of the game in the top of the ninth.
The Eagles (24-20, 12-12) host Northeastern Tuesday at 3 p.m.
