Baseball Loses To St. John's, 17-9

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Joe Panik and Jeremy Baltz both hit two home runs and St. John's hit seven as a team to beat the Boston College baseball team, 17-9, Tuesday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
Panik hit a three-run homer and a two-run shot while Baltz had a solo and a two-run round tripper.
Greg Hopkins went 3-for-6 with a homer and three runs, Jimmy Parque was 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI and Sean O'Hare hit a grand slam. Seven Red Storm batters in the order recorded both a hit and an RBI.
Sean Hagan got the win on the mound for St. John's (35-16), throwing 5.0 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked four.
Junior Mickey Wiswall led the Eagles (28-24) at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI. Senior Robbie Anston went 2-for-4 and sophomore Andrew Lawrence was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs. Junior Matt Hamlet had a hit, walked three times and drove in two runs.
Wiswall's 56 RBI this year are the fifth-most in a single season at Boston College.
Baltz hit a solo home run on a full count for St. John's in the top of the second to give it a 1-0 edge before the Red Storm scored nine times in the third to build an insurmountable lead.
Seven of those runs crossed the plate thanks to a pair of homers and all of them were scored with two outs. Panik turned on a 1-0 fastball for a three-run homer and then three-straight singles brought in the Red Storm's fifth run of the game. A walk loaded the bases and then O'Hare pulled a 1-1 pitch for a grand slam to make it a nine-run game.
Joe Witkowski kept the inning going with a double to the gap in left and then Scott Ferrara drove him in with a single to make it 10-0.
The Eagles broke through in the bottom half of the third with a run. Anston singled the other way with two outs and Hamlet walked to put a pair on base. Wiswall then dropped a double inside the line in right for BC's first run.
Baltz, Hopkins and Parque hit three-straight homers for four more St. John's runs in the fourth to increase the lead to 14-1.
BC scored two more times in its half of the fourth. Freshman Matt Watson led off with a walk, then Lawrence and sophomore Brad Zapenas both hit singles to load the bases with one out. Junior Garret Smith and Hamlet both forced runs in with walks before the inning ended.
St. John's and BC traded runs in the sixth inning before Panik hit his second homer of the game. He delivered a two-run shot in the seventh to make it 17-4.
The Eagles scored five times in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to 17-9. Sophomore Spenser Payne hit a leadoff pinch hit double to the gap in right. Freshman Philip Miclat and sophomore Marc Perdios both walked to load the bases and then Hamlet forced Payne across the plate with another walk. Wiswall dropped a double inside the line in right that cleared the bases to make it 17-8. Freshman Matt McGovern brought in the final run with an RBI single to left.
BC now prepares for its final regular season ACC series when it hosts No. 6 Georgia Tech. The first game of the series is on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
