Baseball Falls at No. 18 Virginia Tech, 3-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech's Mathew Price allowed one run on six hits in a complete game effort to lead the No. 18 Hokies to a 3-1 win against the Boston College baseball team at English Field Saturday afternoon.
Price struck out nine batters and did not issue a walk until the ninth inning. He threw 109 pitches and 74 of them were strikes. He faced the minimum number of batters after allowing a single to leadoff the sixth.
Junior Pat Dean was strong as well, allowing three runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work. He struck out two, didn't walk anyone but hit four batters. Sophomore Taylor Lasko threw 2.0 perfect innings in relief.
Andrew Rash provided the game-winning hit for Virginia Tech (31-14, 13-10 ACC) in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer. He also hit a triple in the game.
Senior John Spatola hit his 11th home run of the year, a solo shot in the top of the second. He and junior Matt Hamlet both had two hits for the Eagles (24-19, 12-11).
The Hokies loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first but only got one run across the plate when Dean induced a 6-4-3 double play.
Spatola tied the game immediately in the top of the second when he drove a 1-0 pitch over the wall in dead center to leadoff the frame.
Andrew Rash gave the lead back to Virginia Tech in the fourth inning with a two-run homer to the gap in left with two outs that proved to be the game-clincher.
Boston College will look to take a win in the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
