The Boston College softball team dropped maybe its toughest game of the season on Saturday afternoon losing an absolute heartbreaker to NC State, 4-3, at Dali Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.
The loss is the seventh in a row for the Eagles and it drops them to 9-17 (0-6 ACC) on the year, while the win improves NC State to 23-15 (6-3 ACC) for the season.
It is only the second time all season that BC has had the lead after six innings and failed to come out with a win.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as senior Renee Ramos continued her power surge hitting a solo home run to center field to give BC a 1-0 lead. Ramos has homered in three of the Eagles last four games giving her a total of seven home runs for the season.
NC State countered with a solo home run of its own in the bottom half of the second inning off of freshman Nicole D'Argento to tie the game at 1-1.
D'Argento would then settle down after that retiring 12 of the next 13 Wolfpack batters to keep the score tied at 1-1 heading into the seventh inning.
That is when the Boston College offense finally broke through thanks in large part to the efforts of the other BC freshman Maria Pandolfo. Pandolfo's clutch two-run home run couldn't have come at a better time for the Eagles as it put them up by two runs going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
D'Argento struck out the first NC State batter to give the Eagles one out in the inning. The next batter singled to second base, and coach Finley brought in junior Allison Gage to try to close out the win for BC. The first batter Gage faced hit a two-run home run to center field to tie the game at 3-3. The very next batter after that the Wolfpack ended the game with a walk-off home run this time to left field to make the score 4-3.
D'Argento pitched a great weekend for BC going 12 and a third innings allowing only four earned runs while striking out 11 batters.
Boston College will now come back home for a non-conference game against in-state rival Massachusetts on Tuesday, April 6. The game starts at 4 p.m.
