CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team lost to Massachusetts, 8-4, Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
UMass' Bryan Leigh threw a complete game, allowing four runs on nine hits. He struck out six and walked four. He threw 145 pitches with 89 of them being strikes.
Junior Mickey Wiswall, sophomore Anthony Melchionda and redshirt freshman Rob Moir each had two hits in the game. Wiswall had a double and drove in two runs and Moir also recorded a two-bagger. Melchionda hit his third home run of the season and scored twice.
BC was the first to get on the board as it scored a run in the bottom of the first. Senior Robbie Anston drew a leadoff walk and was moved up to second on a sac bunt by junior Matt Hamlet. Wiswall took a pitch on the leg and then senior John Spatola found the hole on the left side for an RBI single.
The Minutemen put up three runs in the third - two unearned - to take a 3-1 lead. UMass loaded the bases with the help of two Boston College errors and then a wild pitch scored the first run. Ryan Cusick brought home a run with a sac fly to right and then Mike Donato brought home the frame's last run with a single through the left side.
UMass scored another run in the fourth. Peter Copa led off with a triple to the gap in right and Tom Conley brought him home quickly with an RBI single.
Melchionda got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning with an opposite field solo homer.
The Minutemen opened the game up with four runs in the sixth to make it 8-2. Copa got hit by a pitch with one out and then Conley singled to put runners on first and second. Mike Gedman pulled an RBI single through the right side and then Alex Fischer doubled to the gap in right for two more runs. Cusick brought home another run with a single up the middle.
Boston College scored twice in the ninth but that is all it could get. Melchionda and Moir started the inning with consecutive singles through the left side and with two outs, Hamlet walked to load the bases. Wiswall then hit the gap in left for a two-run double.
Conley went 4-for-4 for UMass (5-17) with an RBI and two runs. Alex Fischer was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs.
