Baseball Loses Finale Against Maryland, 4-2

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Maryland's Brett Harman struck out 12 batters in a complete game effort as the Terrapins defeated the Boston College baseball team, 4-2, Sunday at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
Harman scattered six hits and both BC runs came on solo homers. He threw 114 pitches - 75 strikes - and only walked one batter. Harman retired the last nine batters that stepped to the plate.
Junior John Leonard was strong again in his second start of the season, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing one run and one hit while striking out four and walking one. He retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced.
Senior John Spatola was 2-for-4 at the plate with one of the homers, his eighth of the season. Freshman Matt Watson hit his sixth long ball of the year.
Maryland jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first with a run. With two outs and Brandon Padula on first after a fielder's choice, Matt Marquis went the other way with a 2-0 pitch for a double and Padula came all the way around to score.
Watson tied the game with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the fourth, taking the first pitch of his at-bat over the wall in left-center.
The Terps pulled ahead again in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs. Alfredo Rodriguez led off with a double down the line in left and then he moved to third on a groundout to short. Padula brought him in with a single to left and then a Marquis single put runners on the corners. Jack Cleary dropped an RBI single in left-center to make it 3-1.
Spatola got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the frame when he pulled a 1-0 offering around the pole in right.
Padula matched that with a solo home run in the top of the eighth to extend the lead to two runs again, 4-2.
Padula went 2-for-4 with that homer, two RBI and three runs for the Terps (13-21, 4-11 ACC). Marquis was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
The Eagles (15-16, 6-9) are back in action on Tuesday when they host UMass at 3 p.m.
