BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Boston College baseball team lost the rubber match of a three-game series at Florida Atlantic, 11-7, Sunday afternoon at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
The Eagles got out to another early lead but gave up multiple runs in the first three innings to let it slip away.
Juniors Matt Hamlet and Mickey Wiswall hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the first to give BC the early 2-0 edge. It was Hamlet's second in as many games and it was also Wiswall's second of the season. Hamlet had two RBI in the game and Wiswall added a double and two runs.
Freshman Matt Watson went 3-for-4 for BC while sophomore Brad Zapenas went 2-for-4. Senior Robbie Anston hit a triple to extend his hitting streak to 18 games dating back to last season. Senior John Spatola and sophomore Anthony Melchionda recorded doubles.
After the Eagles got ahead in the top of the first, Florida Atlantic tied the game in the bottom half when Dan Scheffler went to the opposite field for a two-run home run.
The Owls put up two more runs in the bottom of the second to take a lead they would never relinquish. Nick Delguidice and Eddie Cassidy both drew walks to start the inning and then Raymond Church bunted himself on to load the bases with nobody out. Anthony Mesa reached on a fielder's choice that brought in a run to give FAU the lead. Moran picked off Mesa at first for the second out but a passed ball scored Cassidy to make it 4-2.
Florida Atlantic extended the lead in the third with another two-run inning thanks to a Delguidice single.
BC pulled within a run by scoring three times in the top of the fourth. Zapenas and Watson both singled with one out to put runners on the corners. Junior Garret Smith walked to load the bases and Anston drove in a run on a fielder's choice, but the throw to second drew the shortstop off the bag so everybody was safe.
Hamlet drove in the second run with a sac fly to right and then with runners on the corners, Kevin Alexander balked to score Smith and make it 6-5.
The Owls got those three runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Albaladejo singled and Andy Mee brought him home with a triple out of the reach of Anston in center. Scheffler walked to put runners on the corners with one out and Gratton singled to cash in FAU's eighth run. Delguidice continued his hot hitting with an RBI single to put the lead at 9-5.
FAU put up two more runs in the seventh to take an 11-5 lead. Scheffler got the first run with a solo home run to the gap in right and Delguidice added an RBI double in the inning.
BC posted two more runs in the top of the ninth. Anston walked and Wiswall doubled to put a pair in scoring position. Melchionda drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center and then Spatola hit the chalk down the line in right for a double and another run to make it 11-7.
Delguidice went 3-for-3 in the game with four RBI for the Owls. Mee, Scheffler, Gratton and Church each had two hits while Scheffler drove in three. Ryan Garton picked up the win from the bullpen, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing four hits. He walked one and struck out four.
BC now heads to Miami for the week for a pair of series. The Eagles face Florida International on Tuesday and Wednesday night before opening ACC play on Friday at No. 10 Miami.
