BOCA RATON, Fla. - Nick Delguidice went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double and nine RBI to lead Florida Atlantic to a 15-6 win against the Boston College baseball team Saturday at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
BC got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning but the Owls scored 12 unanswered runs from the second to fifth innings to take the win.
Colby Gratton went 3-for-4 from the plate for FAU with three runs. Andy Mee, Dan Scheffler and Antony Mesa each had two hits and Scheffler also drove in a pair. Eddie Cassidy hit a homer and had two RBI. Mike Gipson picked up his second win against BC this season, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing four runs - two earned - on nine hits. He struck out six and didn't surrender a walk.
Eight of the nine FAU players in the starting lineup recorded a hit.
Senior Robbie Anston and juniors Matt Hamlet and Mickey Wiswall each had two hits for BC. Anston had a double, Hamlet hit his first home run since 2008 and had a double and Wiswall recorded a double and three RBI. Senior John Spatola went 3-for-4 and sophomore Brad Zapenas went 2-for-4.
The Eagles got ahead in the top of the first when Hamlet took a 1-1 pitch the opposite way to right-center for a solo home run.
Florida Atlantic responded with three runs in the bottom of the second and never looked back. Delguidice turned on a 2-0 fastball for a two-run homer to put the Owls on top and then Mesa cashed in the third run with an RBI single.
FAU put up five more runs in the third to take a commanding 8-1 lead. The first five batters recorded hits in the inning and Delguidice cleared the bases with a double that one-hopped the wall in right to increase the lead to six runs. He got to third on a wild pitch and Eddie Cassidy plated him with a sacrifice fly.
The Owls scored three more times in the fourth when Delguidice lifted his second homer of the day - a three-run shot - to give FAU an 11-1 advantage.
Delguidice picked up another RBI in the fifth with a single to make the lead 12-1.
BC posted three runs in the top of the sixth to cut into the deficit. Anston led off the inning with a double down the first base line and after a groundout, Wiswall drove him in with a single to right. Sophomore Anthony Melchionda singled through the left side to put runners on first and second and a Spatola pop up fell for a single.
The second baseman then threw to the shortstop to try and force out Melchionda, but he lost it in the sun and the ball rolled all the way to the wall behind third base to score two runs and make it 12-4.
Cassidy hit his home run in the bottom of the sixth when he led off and hit the foul pole in right field to get a run back.
The Eagles picked up two more runs in the seventh. Anston got an infield hit with a grounder to the hole at deep short with one out and then Hamlet doubled over the right fielder's head to put both runners in scoring position. Wiswall went the other way and snuck a double inside the line in left to pick up two more runs and make it 13-6.
FAU responded with two more runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning on a Scheffler double and a Delguidice sac fly.
The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
