The Boston College softball team simply couldn't get its offense going all day on Thursday afternoon as it could only muster up three hits in a 5-2 loss to Bethune-Cookman at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Fl.
The loss drops Boston College to 5-4 on the season, while the win improves Bethune-Cookman to 6-10.
BC opened the scoring with its only offensive bright spot of the day in the top of the first inning. The Eagles did their damage with two outs as senior Dani Weir extended the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Renee Ramos followed that up with a home run over the right field wall to give Boston College a 2-0 lead.
Ramos' home run was the 22nd of her career, and third of the season, which puts her into sole possession of fourth place on the Boston College career home runs list passing Jenna Macchi (2004-07). The two RBI's also give her 100 for her career as an Eagle.
The Eagles lead wouldn't last long as Bethune-Cookman responded in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run home run of its own off senior Taylor Peyton (2-3) to tie the game at 2-2.
Bethune-Cookman grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning as Peyton got in a bases loaded jam with two outs. A walk, a single and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Sabrina Ferguson, and she cleared them with a three-RBI double to put BC behind 5-2.
After the historic longball the BC offense went silent as it could only manage two hits over the next six innings. A fifth inning Alison Kooistra single, and a seventh inning Blair Destito single was all the Eagles got the rest of the game off of pitchers Chastity Sanders and Allison Garcia who combined for the shutout.
Boston College is back on the field tomorrow as it will travel to Orlando, Fla. to take part in the University of Central Florida Tournament. The Eagles first game of the day is against New England rival Providence at 1:30 p.m.
